-What setting and FPS to you intend to play on?

-How do the rest of your system look like?

-Where do you want to buy them/Where do you live?

290 if you can, it'll likely last quite a bit longer and is flat out much more powerful AND gives a better upgrade path to higher resolution monitors (extra vram).

RIP in pepperonis m8s

If you can afford the 290 I'd go for that over the 280x. better performance, and newer version of gcn so it's got freesync support etc... and there's some really good prices on 290's at the moment, can be had for well under 300 dollars.

I am bulding a brand new pc, and so far, I've only been searching for stuff. I plan to play on 1080p, and also do some video editing. I am currently an exchange student, from Brazil, living in CO USA.

Why do they call their cards double D´s , sound well weird.

XFX coolers are solid , go with the 290 is much faster.

Id say the R9 290, It is more powerful and has 4gb of Vram.

The R9 280x would be enough in most cases, But you will have a advantage with 4gb of vram over 3gb when rendrering.

I went from a Gigabyte branded 280/280x kind of power to the gigabyte R9-290, only a single tier up, but a worthy one at that I can tell you...

Before it gets brought up...if at all...No..the 290 is NOT overkill for the 1080p resolution.

I thought this before buying one...to replace my HD7950 (280) @ 7970+++ (280x) speeds.

I was wrong, it's perfect. Esp now at it's pricing!!!!

It's actually a bloody good sweetspot for now, and future titles.

MAXED OUT GAMES, Now & Later on in future!!!!!!

You'd be kicking yourself afterwards if you didn't buy it.

My 7950 (R9-280) overclocked to the balls @ 1200Mhz core (on air) from it's 1000Mhz + voltage = 76*c at max (aggressive fan profile)

(Using the same case that housed the 7950)

My 290 @ stock clocks can do more performance than my heavily overclocked 7950 profile, let alone smashing the 7950 @ it's stock clocks and @ 73*c and is quieter under load too than my previous card, and can still be overclocked.... < epic win

Just a sweet as powerhouse of a card!

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I will pick the 290 also

but avoid XFX as first their cooler and fan are rated on the poor side just barely better than the reference cooler

also their QC is poor as you will get overheating GPUs because of the bad cooler and VRAM issues which cause artifacts

and their customer support is horrible even if they provide lifetime warranty

the best brand to go for AMD cards are Sapphire or PowerColor

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

The 290 is like $50 or less ( if you get one on sale ) more than the 280X and you will get a substantial performance gain and also all those new features that come with a GCN based GPU. For example FreeSync, TrueAudio and at least some support for dx12 which will be a huge deal in the coming year or so. Microsoft says that the core functionality will work but the extra features will need new hardware.
