"Soon You'll be Able to Touch Things in VR"

Reddit AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2hxrcj/dexmo_f2_a_mechanical_exoskeleton_with_actual/

To start, here's how this is suppose to work: "It works like this, when the avatar you are controlling hits a digital object, a signal is sent back via our SDK to Dexmo F2 and the small actuators actuates, brakes the joint and locks the exoskeleton. When you further bend your finger inwards, a normal force will be created on your fingertip."

So we have the Oculus, Virtuix Omni, STEM controller system, and now this...thing. The device is in the early stages of development and is made of 3D printed components. The current prototype is extremely fragile, which doesn't surprise me, but the retail version is expected to be made out of metal. As for the degree of feeling you can get, it's only good for knowing if something is there or not there. Kotaku gives an excellent example of what this means: "Games about hard wooden blocks? Good to go. Games about stroking puppies are going to take a while longer."

This device by Dextra Robotics will be compatible with the STEM controller system, which will definitely come in handy, since accurate movements must be made in order to accurately "feel" what's there or not there. I don't think I explained that in the best way, but I think you all get what I mean.

So what do I think about this? I think that this is a fantastic product, but I really want more information. The concept sounds extremely cool, and it's just another piece to the VR puzzle. This combined with the other VR products I listed above will make VR gaming exciting (although it already is), more interactive than what it already is, and very pricey, but it's almost worth it, so long as the games keep coming.

I'm sure that we'll be getting more information soon, because the device is expected to hit Kickstarter sometime this month. The price tag will be more or less $200, but this is subject to change.

I saw this awhile back and I have to say I can't wait till it becomes available to consumers. Nice to see that this technology is still in development after all these years. :D

Great, with this, it will not be so obvious what I do in VR...

I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

Well you wouldn't be able to push yourself off of things, or gab onto objects to pull you up. But things like that imo won't come, instead simulated reality will be the next step in VR, with full body immersion.

But I like the progress, kinda....... @TopWargamer's post

I'm still counting the days until we get to Sword Art Online levels of immersion. The day that comes out is the day I sell my soul to video games, because I'll practically be living in them.

Pls, I'm locking all of my doors and barricading them. Maybe throw up a few traps here and there. I don't fear your Death Gun!

Okay, maybe a little bit.

What a great thread, from the next step in VR, to stalking murderers and sex simulation robots.
