Samsung, LG, or Sony. 37" will be less than $800 for sure.

Get a smart tv, it will improve compatibility if you're planning to use it with a PC.

LED LCD is the best way to go, I will look up a couple good ones in a moment for ya.

BTW the only standard tv sizes are 32" and 40" but you said nothing over 37" so I guess it is 32" for you.

It may not be particularly common anymore, but 37" is most certainly a standard size.

@Theo Obviously if you're looking at Euro's then BestBuy isn't available for you, but this is just an example:

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/lg-electronics-lg-37-1080p-60hz-lcd-hdtv-37ld340h-37ld340h/10174106.aspx?path=a18894c53d84a7f18ceca320eb1683cfen02

With that in mind, you WILL find better quality displays at 32", because you can get 120Hz HDTV's or Plasma models.

Is there a reason you can't go above 37"? Are you restricted by the size of your TV stand/cabinet/location? Going 40" will give you WAY more options, and honestly 800 Euro is a pretty huge budget for 32" and even 40" these days.

Example of a very solid 32" HDTV:

The first one you linked is really bad, only LCD, and not a smart tv.

The second link is what OP should be looking for.

Going for 40" would be way better than just 32"

Plasma is not something you should buy.

:) thats about it

I agree that the BestBuy TV is a piece of crap, but I was just pointing out that 37" HDTV's are, in fact, a real thing :P

I also agree that going 40" - if possible - is the better option. However, it may not be possible due to size or weight constraints.

Finally, you're 150% wrong about Plasma :) Plasma TV's are, in my humble opinion, superior to LCD (CCFL or LED backlit) in most scenarios. I bought a relatively cheap ($550 CAD) 50" LG Plasma TV, and it's visual quality just blows most LED TV's out of the water. To get a similar picture quality, I'd have to spend around triple for an LED TV, and even in that case it won't come close to the Black Levels I can get. And this isn't even the best Plasma you can get. A Panasonic VT60 or similar blows mine out of the water, so it's not even a fair comparison against LED. In the visual quality department, only OLED approaches/surpasses Plasma with current consumer HDTV technology.

There are really only two reasons to buy LED in my opinion:

1. You cannot light control the room, and it will have direct sunlight on the screen - LED have much brighter screens over plasma, but this is really only an issue in direct sunlight.

2. You're primarily using the HDTV as a Computer Monitor. While Image burn-in is basically a thing of the past for Plasmas, LED does have certain advantages over plasma when using it as your desktop in a regular PC environment. However, even an HTPC will be totally fine on a Plasma TV.

Most of the "flak" that Plasma gets is from old Plasma technology that was made irrelevant back in the early-to-mid 2000's.

Yeah I just don't like the fact that you need to carefully set it up at the start to prevent damage to the screen, burn ins, and the 600hz flickering you see when you look at a plasma tv through a camera.

Its a lot cheaper and the ability to dim individual parts of the backlight is great, but some LED tvs also have full led backlights.

I use my tv with my computer and its basically on the same image for hours and days.

To avoid damaging the display, you simply need to not crank the brightness too high... which you shouldn't do anyway because it will make the visuals distorted and look like crap anyway (same with LED). Burn-in is a non-issue with any modern Plasma. And if you're super paranoid, any good one will have an extra special anti-burn-in mode (Though it's not necessary for 99% of users).

The 600Hz flickering through cameras? I honestly don't see why this is relevant? 60Hz or 120Hz displays can also flicker through cameras too. Also a note: the 600Hz isn't actually the refresh rate, but the subfield drive. The actual refresh rate of Plasma TV's varies, but is often 48 or 72Hz, or even 60Hz. It does pulse multiple times per refresh though, which is how the subfield drive works. Unfortunately it's an Apples to Oranges comparison when talking refresh rates between LCD and Plasma.

In your case if you use your TV as a direct desktop monitor, maybe LCD is better. But that doesn't mean that's true for everyone.

Honestly, I don't think I could go back to an LCD (CCFL or LED) HDTV after going Plasma. I couldn't stand the decrease in quality after seeing it. OLED or another Plasma TV for me if mine dies anytime soon :P

Thank you both, I guess i cant use plasma since the tv is often in a brightly lit room (sun) but however actually i could get a 40", the current one is a 37" with massive bezels, and the new ones i see have very thin ones so it wont be a problem.

So if you have any good suggestions for 40" and 32" i will gladly take them :D

With a budget of $800 Euro, I'm thinking that both of those are actually a little under-spec'd. Specifically, they're both 60Hz models. If he's going to spend that much, may as well get a 120Hz TV so that 24p Blu-Ray playback is smoother.

I'd recommend something like this model here:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN40H6350-40-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B00I94ISS0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1406857245&sr=8-3&keywords=40%22+samsung+hdtv+120hz

The only other thing you need to consider is if you want 3D capability or not, and what type (Active vs Passive - and there are sub-types in each type).

Sony is a great Brand ,Yes they can be Pricey But they are Top notch :

I have done some research for you - Cheaper than you said & Bigger ,here is the link

http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/televisions/w800b-series

I just got my self a 55" TV - Sony - for use with my PC / Cable TV it works just as things should & im more than happy with it.

If you are plaining on getting the TV for not just watching TV but to also use it with PC / Even consoles Sony is great .

Input lag times are a big factor with TV's these days . Put it this way simple & easy a PC has a CPU - a TV also has a processor that must process the input ,then it has to put it on the screen ,EG: if it's a 50ms in put lag time TV you will see this: slower mouth movement & screen reactions poor picture & even pixelated blocks around fast moving scenes in movies/TV/Cable/DVD so on .

There for grabing a TV that has say 5ms-20ms in put lag is going to be good ,Bad things like these stated can also come from other stuff in the TV quality ,bad manufactuer's so on .You are only looking for a small TV of just 37" or more so around these sizes TV's should be more than fine .

NOTE: never ever trust a Manufacture on ms response times as they are most of the time wrong. Whast you can also do is check this site out & simply pick a TV out from the list . Here is that link . YOU MUST CHECK IT OUT OK cool. http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

For me to choose a TV for that size ,for me it would go like so (Every 1 has there own preffered Brand)

1.Sony

2.LG

3.Samsung

Get back to us. You can Afford a great TV with that price range & get bigger & even Quality so have fun ...

  • 3 weeks later...

If anyone is still interested, ive chose the Samsung UE40H6400 that ive found for around 600euros.

I havent read anything really negative about it that other TV's at this price range can fix, and the 3D isnt a focus of mine which apparently isnt the best on it.

Nice! Yeah the TechRadar review basically says the 3D is "uncomfortable" to watch.

We'd love to hear your initial impressions and/or a review of it, plus some pics!
