Worth Changing Platforms?

My brother is currently running an AMD FX-4300 in his system, and he REALLY wants to upgrade.

I can get him a FX-8320 that should just drop right into his board and work (MSI 970A-G46), but he really wants to go Intel. He is also determined that it will be an i5 or greater (not necessarily unlocked).

Is it worth spending around $300 to get an i5 and a reasonable H97 motherboard (don't want to get a worse chipset)? Or should he just spend around $160 and get the FX-8320?

I know than any Haswell i5 will outperform the 8320, but is it worth the extra $140?

I LOVE Intel but I'd recommend the 8320.

I would honestly go for the 8320, but I don't have a ton of intel experience.

If you want the Intel wait for Broadwell to be released.  14 nm die shink is coming at the end of the year.

The 8350 is not far behind the i5, so in your case not worth it to get the i5.

The 8320 is way better in performance per dollar as an upgrade.

It all depends on what type of games he plays.  Until you answer that, we can't give you a good answer.

Unless he plays MMOs or a lot of DayZ/ Arma I would get the 8320.

He plays pretty much anything he can get. He's definitely going to get GTA V when it released for PC.

Could you be more specific please?  Does he play MMOs, does he play Assassin's Creed? BF4?  Minecraft?

The only reason i specifically call out DayZ and Arma is because those games run MUCH better on intel hardware. For most games however, the 8320 would be just fine. I'm sure it will do well in GTA 5.

In this situation I think he should go for a 8350 or a 8320. No need to change the platform.
