The i7 6700K and i7 7700K both are still perfectly capable gaming CPUs, specially if you refrain from multi-tasking while gaming.

You can pair them with a GTX 1080 yes, do consider the 1070 Ti if you want to save a buck as it performs much the same after overclock or even the recent released RTX 2070 because it'll give you 1080 performance but let you play around with Ray Tracing when it becomes a real thing.

Hi so I currently have a 6700k at 4.2ghz and a 1060. If i upgrade to a 1080 will I be benefited from it or will my CPU bottleneck because I was playing Bo4 multiplayer and gpu usage was around 97 so If i get a 1080 it will go down the gpu usage so I just wanted to know if it would bottleneck.

If you only have a 1080p 60hz display there's no real reason to upgrade your GPU

I have a i7-6700 with a GTX 1080. While there may be a slight bottleneck, it's too small to matter. So for your case, it'll be even less so.

Thanks for all the replies and btw i have a 144hz monitor so thats why

Even for a 1080p 144hz display you can just disable a few settings like shadows or AA to get your fps a lot higher on a 1060.

Also is it a free-sync or g-sync display?

So I have a 6700k clocked at 4.2ghz and was wondering when I should upgrade to a better cpu. I game at 1080 but 144hz so I need the extra cpu power. Im scared that in only 1 year my cpu will be a bottleneck to my gtx 1080. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

if your CPU is not bottleknecking your GPU now, it won't next year (granted you don't break your CPU somehow). If you really want to upgrade, nab a Ryzen 7 or get a Ryzen 5 and OC it.

Only upgrade when you're not getting the performance you want. Also, how would the 1080 suddenly br bottlenecked by your CPU? If it doesn't now, not like anything will change about either the graphics card capacity or the CPU capacity.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

It won't bottleneck a 1080 and if you want more frames at 144hz, you just need to overclock your CPU. IPC didn't exactly rise since Skylake for Intel CPUs so upgrading wouldn't be that beneficial at the moment. Stick to it for a year or two more, it's perfectly capable for gaming.

Hi, I have a 6700k and a GTX 1080 and Ive noticed that in some games my GTX 1080 gets held back this is important because I play at 1080p 144hz. I was wondering if i OC my CPU to 4.5ghz will this help the bottleneck? I have never OC'd but Ive watched many videos. My GPU usage is usually around 75 %to 95% so I really need the extra performance. Thanks!

Edit: My CPU usage is around 40% to 60%

Your GPU is likely the culprit. Check the GPU usage since you only have 40% usage on the Cpu side.

It isnt because I upgraded from a GTX 1060 and im getting a little bit better performance but not what I was expecting.
