16GB CL16 vs 8GB CL14

I currently have Kingston HyperX 2x4GB 2133mhz CL14 sticks.

I want to upgrade but the matching sticks are no longer sold in my country so I cannot add them in.

I can however buy the HyperX 2x8GB 2600mhz CL16 kit to upgrade and sell my old ones.

My motherboard is H170 so they will run at 2133mhz.

Is 16GB at a slower CL16 latency going to be better than 8GB at CL14?

Ive seen benchmarks of CL16 vs CL14 of the same ram size, however I do hope the ram increase would outweigh the 2-3fps that could be lost from slower timings.

Some of my games only just hit 75fps (monitor refresh rate) so if I do loose 2-3fps I wont be too happy.

Any advice?

When it comes to ram, capacity is ALWAYS the better option.

Don't worry about CL and ram speed, just get the 16GB kit.

Cheapest kit is fine.

At 2133MHz, there will be a decent difference between CL14 and CL16, but you probably won't notice it in real life situations.

But 16GB 2133MHz CL16 >>> 8GB 2133MHz CL14

Based on CL16 at 2600MHz you can probably run it at CL14 with 2133MHz.

Have you ever gone from 2133mhz to like 3200mhz? it does make your system faster. It's fine saying capacity is the thing to go for but speed is also worth paying a bit extra for.

how would I do that? will it typically just have better timings at that freq or do i have to change settings (locked as H170)

I dont have a choice for 16GB CL14, and am limited to 2133mhz. So there is no paying a bit more in this case.

Basically will I loose performance going to CL16 or will the extra ram capacity outweigh this?

You will lose performance. And the extra capacity is worth it if you need it (plus more caching of programs).

Not 100% site, but you should be able to set the timings for your RAM at least in the BIOS. Not the easiest thing.

Ultimately if you just replace the team with that 16GB kit you will lose 0-5% performance depending on the application. A couple frames at most.

Not always, but budget kits i'd go for capacity.

if i had to pick speed or capacity on ryzen it'd probably be speed.
