Who Do You Fold For?

I'm starting since yesterday with boinc, and today with folding at home....I'll fold....for the love of life...

As absolutely stupid as it sounds I fold for the family dog that passed from cancer

 

 

At the time I had 3 grandparent's that had passed, didn't shed a tear for one of them.  But several month's after both my grandfather and family dog passed this picture came up as a memory on FB and I balled and drank for HOURS, non-stop water works.  My reasoning is that I believe in heaven and family members have generations of family to catch up with and generations to watch.  But a dog.... a truly loved dog was created for one thing and that's to be with it's human's.  Our Golden was 5 when she was diagnosed with cancer and my dad, who wouldn't spend money on blown out shoes or a pair of dollar store sunglasses when his are missing an arm and a lens, spent Thousands on our second golden and drove regularly to another city to give her the treatements she needed.  In the end it bought her another year where I got to show up for work every day to her happy butt skid plopping on the ground for her daily puppy hug.

 

I wasn't close with any of my grandparents by the time they passed, my life had gone off the rails and they were past interaction by the time I tried to reconnect.  My only remaining grandparent, my Grandmother, who is my favorite person in the world, however, is one that I am very close to and she is suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's.  I don't know how I'm going to handle this one but I hope I can do it with strength.

 

Currently I queue Alzheimer's on my main machine and high priority on the other two, reason being that high priority should be for non-stop crunching but my main machine I use regularly so don't want any interruptions.

I fold for CERN aka LHC, ALICE etc

We all do protein folding, but if we don't come up with some tech then we won't live for very long. A working Fusion Reactor would be nice, I want to see one actually that works.

1) I fold for science. Cop out, yes, but as a Ph.D student in chemistry I appreciate the complex calculations it takes to be able to do the stepwise optimizations and simulations of seemingly simple transition metal complexes that I study. Proteins are orders of magnitude larger and more complex. I'm just happy to help any way I can,

2) I fold for my great-grandma, and everyone who suffers from Alzheimer's/dementia-type conditions. It's not entirely clear to me what my great-grandma passed away from, since my family is cage-y about how she passed, I generally gathered that she had some sort of dementia that caused her to forget everything about the world around her in her last years. Hearing the stories were horrifying, and I don't want people to suffer like that.

3) Most selfishly, I fold because my goddamned super either blasts the heat when it's warm outside or forgets to turn it on when it's 15F/-10C. I can't control the building-wide steam. I can, however, control the heat output from folding.

My co-worker Jason (1974-2023) diagnosed just a few months ago with Colo-Rectal Cancer

I fold for my wife who passed away and left behind myself, a 4 year old son, and a 7 year old son, both who really wanted to grow up with their mom.
