Best laptop for 2018? $2,000ish and under

I'm looking for a pretty nice laptop for productivity and some gaming on the side. I would like it to be portable with nice battery life and decent build quality. $2000 - $2400 ish. Is the surface book a good buy or is there something better value?

Lenovo X1 carbon or Lg gram 15"

 Well top laptop you can get is the Razer Blade 15 for $2,399.99 on Amazon, that a bit more geared towards gaming would be the Razer Blade 15. Being an 8th gen i7 CPU you have the added benefit of 6 cores instead of 4 for productivity, a 1070 Max-Q, and vapor chamber cooling system. The monitor is 144Hz if that's what your looking for with gaming, with the biggest downside being it only has a 256GB SSD (upgradable) and its lack of an ethernet port.

 

The Gigabyte Aero15X v8 is for $1999.00 and has almost the same specs but does not have the same vapor chamber cooling as the Razer Blade 15 and has a bigger SSD starting out. According to PCGamer it can however also have driver issues out of the box.

 

Beyond these two you get into thicker, and cheaper laptops with similar or worse specifications. The most notable one is MSI GT75 Titian for $2199.99 which has very similar specs to the other two except it has a GTX 1080, 120Hz monitor with G-Sync, but its super heavy (almost 10lbs!).

I'm not gonna fight you on that. The MX150 isn't a gaming GPU at all. BUT for a laptop of this size, price, and build quality I've gotta say its a really damn good deal for the money. Plus with the extra 500 you can get a EGPU and hook it up to the TB3 for a better gaming experience.

There's no 5W variant, only 10W and 25W (some models have between 10 to 25W)

EGPU completely gets rid of the idea of portability if he is planning to game on the go, while the aero 15 has plenty of battery life with optimus and the terrific size battery. The aero 15x also doesn't weight much at all and is easily portable to any place that most would care to take it.

Running it to an external display is needed for sure to see good gaming performance. But other then that id say its more then enough. Plus x2 and x4 doesn't mean that the port cant handle 40Gb. Just that the port is using the full 20Gb per PCIe lane.

Acer Predator Helios 300 is the best for the money right now especially if you are gaming on it. It goes for around $1000. I think Linus did a video on it awhile back.

The aero 15 has around a 6 hour battery life when its not gaming. While the Matebook can hit around 9.5 on the same tasks or 13 with just media. Id say for a laptop to have good battery life it needs to be more then a average work day. The eGPU does take away from the portability i agree but its not the focus of the matter. This is firstly a productivity laptop which means its going to need to be ready for the long hall of productivity tasks when your staring at the screen off 5 hours thinking of ways you can get out of doing your work. I find that not being able to play games whenever you want is the best tool for making you work so you can go and play more games.

But the Dell G5 is lacking so many things! It only has 8gb of ram. The SSD is half the size. It doesn't have a 144hz panel. Plus the price is so similar.

Helios 300 is definitely not a good buy unless you have extremely tight budget. Build quality and cooling are major issues

I think the build has more to offer. Especially price wise. The thermal issues pretty much disappear if you use liquid metal. Now it will raise the price a bit and it may take a little bit of laptop knowledge to take it apart but the 144hz screen is what makes it worth it.

Even though many users would disagree, I just bought a surface laptop 2, and I love it! The keyboard is fantastic, the screen is stunning, and the fit, finish and overall polish are outstanding. I am not the biggest Apple fan, as I would assume most users on this forum are, But after having this notebook for a week I finally get it, I wasn't too happy spending $1299 on an i5 laptop with 256gb of storage, but it is swift, and just feels fast in everything that I would use a notebook for. The downsides are; No expansion, AWFUL I/O with no USB C and only one USB port, and Apple-like prices with similar performance. Luckily I was willing to spend a little bit more for a great screen and battery life. I was also looking at a Lenovo Thinkpad because I like the retro style and expandability, also the Thinkpad's keyboard was AMAZING IMO, maybe even better than the surface laptop, but the 3:2 IPS screen on the surface book was the tipping point, it is almost the perfect laptop, and gets a HUGE recommendation from me!
