macbook pro died. Building first video editing pc.

Hello everyone,

 

First time posting and new to the pc world.  I've been using an old 2011 macbook pro 17in laptop to editing videos for over 6 years.  Sadly, like most 2011 macbook pros, the graphics chip died...again.  So with the crazy high prices for new models I've decided to look into the pc building world.  After some months watching a whole bunch of videos on youtube, I think I have a starting point for a build, but could really use some feed back to see if I'm missing something. 

 

Following the format for this thread heres what I got.

 

1. Budget & Location

Around $1500 US. I'm planning to order the parts one Cyber Monday here in the States to get some killer deals to save some money for a monitor or for better components. 

 

2. Aim

Video Editing is the main purpose. I'm going to be start regularly posting videos on youtube so it's going to be a work horse.  I use many of the Adobe CC programs like Premiere, Audition, Lightroom, Photoshop, and some others.  Maybe some light gaming but it's not a need. 

 

3. Monitors

Right now I could use my 4K tv to hold me over for now.  I've been looking into the Dell - P2715Q 27.0" has been getting good reviews from other content creators.

 

4. Peripherals

No idea yet.  Planning to use some spare ones I got lying around until I find ones I like.  I'm open to suggestions :)

 

5. Why are you upgrading?

Walking away from the Apple tree.  I loved my 17in macbook pro but the world, and Apple, has changed quite a bit.

Definitely gonna recommend you Ryzen on this one, due to the extra cores. That should help chew through some encoding. The 970 Evo 500GB is only $60 more than the 250GB, if you want to step up to that. Other than that, I just swapped the PSU out for a higher quality unit, and you're good to go. You can also step down to a B450 motherboard if you don't plan on overclocking/only mild overclocking

I'd stick to something closer to @Cereal5's build. Also, B&H currently have an EVGA 1070ti Gaming on sale for $350. That's a pretty darn good deal if you ask me. 

Since you're editing primarily I would stick to AMD for this one. If you're more on the gaming side than Intel would prove more sufficient.

Snag a 980ti from EVGA on wednesday for $199 and you'll get a shit ton more cuda cores and higher memory bandwidth bus. Helps with video editing. Then double the capacity of all your drives

Just throwing out an option, here are the changes I made: 

- If you don't plan on overclocking then no point in getting the 'k' model of processor (save $50)

- EVGA CLC 280 is $40 cheaper and is good

- non overclocking motherboard with wifi

- slightly cheaper ram with same specs

- 1 500gb boot and programs SSD and 1 1TB raw footage editing SSD 

- changed the powersupply to a solid 650w, don't need any more for this build

I would definitely suggest a better psu. I also think that a larger ssd, even if it is only SATA III would provide a much better editing experience.

 

Given the use case, there really isn't a need for an unlocked cpu. Consider instead the i7-8700 which has turbo clocks just 100MHz lower than the i7-8700K. So performance is very close to a stock i7-8700K.

Sorry I forget to mention that I already have a 1TB Samsung SSD to add to the M.2 and HDD drives. 

 

Regarding the processor, I heard that the intel platform runs better on premiere but after looking on the adobe forums I found this fun page https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2018-Core-i7-9700K-i9-9900K-Performance-1254/#AMEExport-RawBenchmarkResults . I probably will end up going the Ryzen route.  

 

Good to know about the PSU.  After I made this post I saw the Linus video about how you don't need to go overboard on the power supply.

Thanks for the link. Interesting results. In previous tests Puget reported better results by Intel. I guess Adobe has made some Ryzen optimizations. Given the price differential, Ryzen sure looks to be the better choice if most of the work is in Premiere Pro.
