8700k Delid, did you seal it back?

Now that my custom loop is finished, delidding my 8700k tonight. I purchased the gasket maker silicon to reseal it, but have seen some controversal mentions of poorer temperatures when resealed and counter - issues when you dont reseal unless its going onto a flat top open air bench. . .

 

So did you reseal if you delidded? What did you use? was there a negative effect?

 

If you left it unsealed, did you have issues vertical mounting? Any shift in the LM treatment? Uneven core temps?

I havent resealed my delided 4770k. Its runing for 2nd year just fine, temps the samce since delid, vertical mount.

Did you remount from a flat position or verticle?

I have done it both ways. However most of the time I will reseal with gasket maker. Just make sure you aren't apply a thick bead of it. Just a very thin layer then when you clamp it down make sure it is clamped tightly and that the IHS and DIE are making good contact. If you do that then you will have the same performance as not using it.

 

If you decide to not seal back and just let the socket clamp hold it down... remember that the IHS is going to slide when it clamps. So it needs to be a little higher up on the DIE preclamp so that when you do clamp it, it will slide in to the proper position.

 

Also unless you case is fixed to a wall... you can lay it on it's side to remount the chip. So you should be able to put it in horizontally regardless. After the chip is in and clamped down it doesn't matter which way it is mounted.

Thanks for that. Great advice on the clamping. I plan to use a flat card or something to make the gasket seal a thin sheen.

That is the plan. But I may test it without first as a baseline to see if I need to reseal it if temps are drastically different. That way I can check the LM application as well. . . Just mentally preparing for tonights adventure.

Yeah can you do that with LM or will you get bubbles when you apply and take off the IHS and then apply it again

I mean it'll spread, but as long as its warm you can suck up excess / re spread / rinse repeat as needed to my best understanding. Tonight will tell

i always resealed and have not seen temp difference

 

i always do 4 little dots of silicon on the corners of the IHS and clamp it down for 1 hour.

I always try to imitate the original intel gasket. I normally screw on a needle attachment so I can get a extremely thin bead. Then I do it all the way around the IHS and leave that little half inch or so gap (like intel does) then I give it a nice good clamp making sure that the IHS and DIE are making good even contact. I mean that is where the problem comes from if you create a situation they aren't firmly touching, but unless you don't clamp it, let the silicon get too firm before clamping, or clamp it in a way that makes it uneven... then it is hard to mess up. The silicon should still be very pliable so should not impede your ability to have good contact.

 

Then again I still delid with a razor blade. So maybe my advice is too risky lol.

if it works it works, i don't like to use that much silicon because i might have to clean it of at some point.

yes and yes.

 

you get better results putting LM on the DIE and IHS.

So delid was completed / resealed last night using VERY little amount of the gasket maker, but I did it around the entire lid after cleaning the PCB and IHS best I could without risking damage. The residual on the PCB was flush and seemingly a stain. Gave it a rough edge to lock to though, so figured it would be OK. 

 

Initial delid ignore the excess paste, I smeared it a bit cleaning when I removed it. 

 

Cleaned and ready I did get a little more of the black off 

 

Felt like this was a perfect amount. Problem was the house was so cold when I went to do the IHS it would not get out of a ball form! I used a lighter to gently heat the IHS then apply and it seemed to work good. 

 

5.1 ghz was achieved seemingly stable, but ran out of time to do any OC test proper. Temps maxed at 68 at 1.415 V for 5.1 

 

Consequently, pre and post delid results! Same voltage, same stress in Aida64 with CPU FPU and Cache stressed. Rain AIDA64 for 1 hour, the second batch I had to restart mid after the delid, so the second half is shown on the timeline. Max temp pre-delid was 88 C, post delid dropped to 64 C, consequently, my GPU temps dropped from 59-61 down to 45-55 as a result of the CPU no longer heating the loop as much. 

 

All in all, took a little over 2 hours once I shut the PC down to get it back together and ready to stress after letting the seal cure. I'm a believer.

I resealed mine, on the inside where the ihs goes up put some in the corners so the ihs still sits flush

There's no need to reseal, the socket will hold the lid on, if you don't reseal it correctly you can indeed lift the ihs slightly and get bad temps, I've had no issues with LM shifting on my delid or my gpu either.
