Question from the audience at a Valve CES presentation: Microsoft just announced 3 million units of xbox one were sold at launch for the last three months, can you hit that target by the end of the year? Can you do 3 million units?

 

Newell: Well, it'd take a while for them to catch up. I mean, we're at 65 million [sold].

65 million sold? What?

There are 65 million active Steam accounts. Active meaning they are still buying digital games. Steam has nothing physical to sell other then digital games. In other words it Microsoft would have to sell more then 65 million XBones to compete with Steam which is unlikely. Even the PS4 can't compete.

Historically speaking, Microsoft IS DOING THIS. Microsoft would much rather you game on an Xbox vs a Windows based PC, because they make more money off of you. They make money off of every Xbox game you buy. Plus they assume you already bought a Windows based PC anyway, so if you buy games on PC, it doesn't generate them any additional money.
