Google Fiber worth it?

I know Google Fiber is not available very widely at the moment, but does anyone here have it? They provide a plan of 1000mb/s for BOTH up and download.

 

It's $70 usd a month and I wanted to know once it eventually reaches my area (A few years down the road at this rate), would it be worth it or is it unstable?

I am very sad now.. I had actually just heard about it so I figured I'd ask. They have Google fiber in a city 2 hours from me but won't be bringing it to me. 

 

Welp, guess I'll have to stick to 200mb/s

Actually, in Atlanta at least, they gave us a 2 year time estimate in october/november of 2017. I think they started expanding again.

umm... not really stopped.

they are just paused on it in most places. Some have had recent expansions though, like san antonio earlier this year

if you're not by or in one of the major cities they are working on, I wouldn't bother keeping the lights on. Expansion is still happening but is very slow. and if you're not in those areas, you might never see it. If you're in an area they are working on, then keep up with it and keep checking if they are available on the website.

As for worth it, that depends on what other options are available in your area. for my area, it would be 10$ more than what I pay, but it would be 5x the speed.

One thing I haven't heard anything about is how good their isp modem/routers are. The ones my isp gives out are crap and my wifi should be be a lot better and more reliable.

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

AT&T is deploying fiber across the powerlines and it is cheaper and the line are already there. No digging required

I live in KC, they stopped a lot of the installations and stuff, new fiberhoods have lots of delays.

 

Worth is very comparative though, if it's available at or under $100/mo I'd buy it every time, but subjectively have a higher demand than most.

 

The main benefit of Google fiber is local competitors upping their game.  It sounds like you already have 200 mbit, for most workloads you wouldn't see much of a real difference.

It is available in Atlanta, people seem pleased with it here.

 

I have AT&T Gigabit fiber, since Google Fiber is not available in my neighborhood. It rules.

 

On ethernet straight from the modem, I get aprox. 950 Mpbs down / 950 Up. My Wifi AP maxes out at about 500 Mpbs actual speed.

 

Totally worth $70 / month, considering Comcast and the like charge you $45-50 for just 50Mpbs or something ridiculous like that. It has to be said that the only reason AT&T offers their Gigabit at $70/month is because Google is in the market. In other areas where Google is not available, they charge way more.

 

Imagine: You want to play a game, but there is a new 6GB patch out: with Gigabit fiber, that downloads in under a minute.

AT&T, Verizon and Comcast all offer Fiber. AT&T and Verizon might be more competitive on price however. Comcast charges $199 a month + $1000 for install for 2 Gbps fiber, this is their only Fiber offering. The next plan down is 1 Gbps down 35 Mbps up on Docsis 3.1. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I'll have to look into AT&T and Verizon. Google actually responded to my inquiry on fiber internet and said they will send me updates when they get closer to my area.
