Well, if we have an example where I spend $0 for the router, and I have $310, I can get a Fury X for $300.

If I spend half the router price, I could probably get something like a RX580 used.

Hmm...

That wouldn't be too bad, honestly; I guess see the circumstances of the router and go from there.

So right now, I have approximately $850 in CAD to spend. These are the three things I need. The budget could go up if it's a substantial improvement.

GPU - I have what is basically a 750Ti paired with a 8700K and 16GB RAM. Something needs to change here.

Phone - headphone jack is broken and it's getting slow and not keeping up with my use

Wireless router - Mine is not working for me right now. 30mbps on 5GhZ?

Help???

you can look for a used 1070ti/1080 for the GPU then sell the 370, use the rest of the money to find a good phone and router.

What do you play that would warrant upgrading from your 7850 to something better?

Seems like the phone and the router would be a better investment to go for, aiming for a balance in practicality and what you want.

Sell the 8700k and get an i3 8100 to match your 750Ti. /s
Buy a 2nd hand 1070ti/1080/1080ti Just saw your monitor and PSU*. Go with a 1060 6GB. You can get one new for <$400 CAD and probably much cheaper used.

(Edit: **Read it as being the CX450, not the CX450M)
(Edit2: Though I still wouldn't power a 1080ti with 8700k on a CX450M anyway)

Switch to 2.4GHz mode or change what channel you're on and see if things improve. 5GHz can be faster than 2.4GHz if there's direct line of sigh, no interference, and distance isn't a concern... However 2.4GHz is more tolerant of walls and obstacles. Better be would be use ethernet.

I have many options for PSUs. Looking at my local markets I could upgrade PSU to a higher end one for about $30-40 by selling it.

I'm planning for a monitor later too.

Direct line of sight in front of router (5GhZ): 30mbps

Direct line of sight (2.4GhZ): 2-3mbps

Chose emptiest channel. My grandparents, who live really, really close to me (next door neighbours) don't have this issue with their wifi.

The thing is, with the phone I'll be getting it with significant discount. Something like a S9+ for $480, as currently provided by my carrier. The router will cost at most $150, so I'm asking how much I should probably spend on each.

Hmm.

If you're fronting the router in full, that leaves you with around $230CAD. I dunno, how much are cards like the GTX 970 or 980 up there? If you can spend less on the router, what would be the upper bound of cards you could get for that money?

Also consider the wifi card in your PC, as well as whatever antennas it uses. You may end up spending a whole bunch of money on a new router and then find out that the connection is still shit because of a shitty $10 PCIe wifi card.

If you're in direct line of sight to the router use ethernet. Even if you just have to route the cable around the skirting boards or whatever to get it to reach the PC. You can get ethernet cables pre-made to whatever length you need off eBay for about $5-$15.

Spend $15 on an ethernet cable and then that leaves $835 CAD to spend on a GPU and phone.

It's the wifi card intergrated into my AORUS Gaming 5. My phone, my friend's iPhone 8, my grandma's Galaxy A5 all also refuse to get above 30mbps. I tested my phone and my grandma's phone on her Comcast/Shaw XB6 and it gets the full 175mbps from further away, and through a wall.

If you do that you should have enough for a 570 or 580 (not sure on pricing in Canada, probably a fair chunk less than Aus though).

Edit: The ideal there is finding a good used 580 8gb though. That should fit into your budget, at worst requiring a few extra 10s.

Getting that s9 + (although I'd personally go for the smaller phone, especially if the price is better) would definitely be nice, though all of them are probably big wants.

I wouldn't get an S9+. I'd hold out and get the S10. Yeah, it seems like it'll be a bit of a wait, but it's supposed to be quite the device.

Can you find good deals on Vega56 cards? Might be worth it if you're getting a FreeSync monitor...though, honestly, the 1070 mops the floor with it, and they're about the same price if not cheaper on the used market. Dell GSync monitors go quite cheap during Black Friday sales.

@LienusLateTips Any reason why you're not going with ethernet for your PC?

As for other devices, 30mbps should be fine for most tasks you would be doing on a phone or tablet anyway (ie watching youtube or netflix at 1080p).

I'd imagine distance from the router is probably why; if it weren't for the fact that I could get my hands on a long ass ethernet cord, I would be running WiFi, too.

He said he had direct line of sight to the router, and since we're talking about within the confines of a house, I don't think distance is an issue.

30m (100ft) Cat6 ethernet cable for CAD$26 with Prime. https://www.amazon.ca/Fosmon-Network-Ethernet-Router-Printer/dp/B00K3202Y4

And if for whatever reason 30m is not enough (and I very much doubt it since he's within a house and has LoS to the router)

500ft Cat6 Cable + Crimper (w/ Connectors) = Total: CAD$93

And if for whatever reason 500ft of ethernet cable is still not enough, well you probably won't have much luck with a wifi router without using range extenders anyway.

Now there could be plenty of other valid reasons why just running an ethernet cable through the house may not be an option, such as the SO not wanting a random cable cross the floor of the kitchen. Then you could look at other options like routing the cables properly through the walls with wall terminals if you own the home.

Oh, hmm.

Can you find good deals on Vega56 cards? Might be worth it if you're getting a FreeSync monitor...though, honestly, the 1070 mops the floor with it, and they're about the same price if not cheaper on the used market. Dell GSync monitors go quite cheap during Black Friday sales.

Nah, this is Vancouver. $300 for a Fury X, $400 for a 980 Ti or $500 for a Vega 56 is how it works here.

@LienusLateTips Any reason why you're not going with ethernet for your PC?

As for other devices, 30mbps should be fine for most tasks you would be doing on a phone or tablet anyway (ie watching youtube or netflix at 1080p).

I never said I wasn't lmao.

The issue is when I'm one room away from the modem. The speeds reach maximum of about 2-3mbps on 5GhZ, or 1mbps on 2.4GhZ, just one room away. I have a tiny apartment, no more than 900 sq.ft.

It's actually faster to get the WiFi from my grandma's house about 30m away.

Didn't read but 30mb on 5GHz sounds like a chipset issue with whatever piece of hardware you are using to test it.

A new router is like $60

A Chinese android phone is like $200

Buy a brand new 1080 $600 off amazon.

Or don't even buy a new router

All devices only get a max of 30Mbps. My laptop (MacBook PRO) gets around 100 right in front of it and my parents iPhone getting 150. Only exception.
