Nvidia 20 Series graphics cards

SpaceOperator

Im gonna love this one. ok so i am a gamer and i have been one all of my life since 2006 when i was 5 but i've never owned my on rig until now i have a i7-8700k, 4gb ram right now plan to upgrade when ram prices drop or i get more money. a gtx 460 that my brother is letting me borrow since he now has a 1070 and a asus z370 motherboard on the way my computer is not built yet. so i need a graphics card and i want the best performance i can get for a reasonable cost and im not going to buy the 2080ti that is just insane i ain't got 1200 usd to spend on a graphics card but im stuck here.

My board supports SLI ok i was going to get a 2070 but here is the thing 2070 wont support SLI but the fact is i don't know if i want SLI but if i get a 2070 i have no room to upgrade if i need it later down the line so my question is should i get a 2070 or a 2080 i get 75 usd a week and i can wait right now for the graphics card it will take me 2 months to get the 2080 and i don't want all the people who are not buying the 20's right because they either have a 1080ti and dont wish to spend the money but im looking at this like hey i dont have a graphics card so i need one wait Nvida just released a new graphics card that supports ray tracing in real time and the 2070 would cost just a little more than a 1070 ti why not go with it. that is my perspective of the new 20 series cards. but the 2070 will have no way to enter SLI so should i go with a 2080 just to give me a sense that i can upgrade if i needed to. because i have a justification to buy one of these lower end cards?  Is SLI worth it?

That is a terrible idea, pairing an 8700K with 4GB of ram, and a 460.

SLI is not necessary for gaming. Single cards are already very powerful. I'd say set a budget, look at benchmarks, and see what offers the best performance at or below that price point, new or used, depending on how you want to go.

What resolution and FPS are you trying to game at? Or I should say what monitor are you using to game?

i only had enough money right now for 4gb just to get it to post i just started building it. ram prices are high but im not ready to game until i get my 20 card. their are no benchmarks for the 2070 yet.  im still using a dvi/vga monitor i think the refresh rate is like 75hz and resolution is 1980 x something plan on getting a better monitor.

Bonus points for what settings you want to play at. The more info we have, the stronger we can recommend a GPU for you.

Yep, there are 1920 x 1200 monitors. For 1920 x 1200, highest settings, 75Hz, I wouldn't recommend more than the power of a GTX 1080, or RTX 2070, if you're going to go with 1 GPU.

Hopefully not 1280 × 720?

On your monitor, right click on you desktop go to display settings and find resolution and tell me what that is.

If you're interested in 1440P >60 FPS or 4K 60 FPS, highest settings, I'd say go for a GTX 1080 Ti, or an RTX 2080. I'd recommend a RTX 2080 TI too, but you said you didn't want to get one. Otherwise, if you're going with 1440P 60FPS or 1080P any framerate, highest settings, my recommendation of the 1080 or 2070 still stands.

I would still strongly recommend 1070 ti. This card for example

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-5671-KR is only $450 and will save you $150 which you can put towards buying your RAM. 1070 ti will run most of the games pretty well at 1080  and 1440P.

Now let us talk about performance, first of all SLI is not very useful, not worth spending extra money. Also, with the 20 series we don't know if ray tracing will be widely used or will be another feature like Physx that only a handful of games will implement. I mostly play MMOs and multiplayer games so I don't think those games will implement ray tracing any time soon. I would wait for at least another generation to see where this tech is going before paying an extra premium for it. That is just my thinking.

Check out on Newegg, there should be more difference in price of both (I know Nvidia store has 2070 listed at $599, not sure if any partners are offering a cheaper card).

I agree there should be a bigger difference, also keep on eye on /r/buildapcsales subreddit, I don't see any GPU deals at the moment but recently they have been pop up once a week or so.

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/new/

Most are just $50-$100 off but I have seen 1070 for $250 and 1070 TI for 300-350ish recently. Some of the deals are refurbished/used so if your not into that keep an eye out They should be marked as such. Also the really good deals sell out fast, so you have to be on your guard. I bought a 1070TI for $260 used not the most amazing deal but it hasn't died yet :). Read the comments on each deal there is usually a good discussion if it is a good deal or not.

If you want to go with the 20Series, I would go with the 2070 because your really going to be limited by your monitor at this point. (I am Guessing it is 1080p 60hz as we never really clarified that) A 1070 can play almost anything at 1080p 60hz. Oviously you can allways upgrade you monitor down the road as well to higher resolution and/or higher refresh rate.

Have fun building.
