[slightly OT] - What are the best in-game soundtracks (arcade, PC, NES)?

Hello everybody,

I hope I'm not going OT here.

I was thinking about the many times I got hooked to some videogame themes over the years.

So here's my question to you: what are the best in-game soundtracks according to your experience? It can be a proper song, a hook, a theme or just a background track.
My personal picks:

ARCADE:

- Tokio Scamble Formation

- Bubble Bobble

- Super Mario Bros

- Out Run

- Hang-On

- Pac Man

- Ghosts N' Goblins

 

NES:

- Castlevania

- The Legend Of Zelda

- Metroid

 

PC:

- Doom (nearly every track is a killer but I'll go with Doom II's "Into Sandy's City")

- Quake II ("Descent Into Cerberon")

- Lords Of The Realm II (3 of 5 "scroll themes", however the whole OST is great)

- The Elder Scrolls theme ("Morrowind", "Oblvion", "Skyrim")

- Gothic 3 (a great soundtrack, i find "Welcome to Varant" the most interesting part)

- Might And Magic VII ("main menu")

- Duke Nukem 3D ("theme")

 

There would be many others but I'll leave it to you!

• Halo 3: ODST
• Halo 3
• Halo Reach

Call me basic, but ODST's especially is fucking amazing.

Halo in general is really good

Fallout 4 has baller "fuck around and do stupid shit" music, IMO. Skyrim's is just really... good.

Star Wars X-Wing and TIE Fighter, maybe Wing Commander 3+4 (as 1+2 are too old to have good music).

I was about to jump in & say "Halo" but you beat me to it. 
Steve Vai and his successors are phenomenal! 

 

Doom also is amazing. Classic & 2016. I don't remember Doom 3's and never played Doom 2. Though 1993 is mostly just rip offs of famous artists, it's still good. 

Other than that, nothing stands out as good. Only Iconic. 
Gears of war Bwahs, Mario 1-1, Some Zelda songs. 

World of Warcraft, Fallout 3/NV & Elder scrolls themes are iconic but not really songs to listen to imo. 
Fun fact, the guy that wrote Elder Scrolls Underscores also wrote the music for the original Dawn of War games.

i also agree with Elder scrolls music, particularly Oblivion. i leave it on as ambient background music pretty often 

 

Flatout 2's soundtrack works very well and somehow memorable.

If I were to choose a "play path" I'd go with Combat Evolved, 3, ODST, Reach, 2, and 4. I don't like 2's campaign as much as every other Halo nerd seems to, and 4 is such a departure from the usual formula that going to it and then one of the previous ones just ehhhhhh.

 

Also can't forget about the Wars offshoots which are pretty fun strategy? (I suppose) games.

Very fun attempt at doing RTS on a console. The only problem for me was the camera could only zoom out so much and there was no shortcut for HQ or work groups.

Not to mention that in the first one, at least, sometimes the mission difficulty would just randomly go through the goddamn roof.
