New AMD Zen+Vega CPU for $55!!!

The Benjamins

So wait... Is this Ryzen or bulldozer with vega graphics? I'm assuming Ryzen, but I just want to be sure.

Can't wait for RandomGamingInHD to get a hold of one of these.

Probably. That's my thing, I don't think people understand that this is a pretty damn low end chip meant mainly for daily usage, rather than overclocking. These are meant to be slapped in some shit A320 board with cheap RAM rather than a full-on long haul setup.

I well understand that and I never said it was a deal breaker that it's locked, it's still an amazing deal. It just would have been cool to see it unlocked, sure nobody is going to buy this to overclock it, but it would have nice, seeing as AMD's stock coolers are so good.

@Okjoek It's Ryzen, 1st gen seeing as it's 14nm. And yeah, RGIHD is gonna have a blast with this thing.

Yeah, while I do think that leaving it unlocked would've given it a little extra value, I do see why AMD is locking it.

You just gotta love RG, no bullshit in his videos. Just straight up good, cringe free content. He also covers things not many others do, like rare parts or budget parts.

Definitely in my top 5 favorites right now.

It'll actually be interesting to see benchmarks with it. It's probably around as powerful as the top Intel iGPU.

There kinda are already benchmarks.

This is litterally a Ryzen 3/2200U for Desktop with higher TDP:

It is zen based Ryzen is a product name not a arch name like bulldozer and zen.

This is marketed as athlon not ryzen.

This is pretty cool. Little sad it's only a dual core, but that's something amazing considering how a few years ago that'd be a 150-200 dollar part.

This is actually really nice. Like, it's not old tech, zen cores are current, vega is current, and both of them in a cheap CPU with a low TDP, that's really nice. The only thing we need are cheap A420 (or whatever the replacement for A320 will be called) boards.

No, what we really need is a Chipsetless ultra low end Board.

As you may know (or not), RYZEN is a SOC and does not need a Chipset as the RYZEN Chipsets are only PCIe to something things...

unlike this and idk how Intel's iGPU handles multiple 4K monitors simultanously :P.

Probably very poorly...

I had a Celeron G1820 at a time and it really sucked at twin 1080/1200p Screens.

The i3/4150 seems to be a lot better....

6 hours ago, geo3 said:

Why the hell would they name it Athlon?

Because it is locked and castrated, so to differentiate it further from RYZEN.

You don't want that brand name to go too far down....

5 hours ago, Taf the Ghost said:

It's still a good value. If it wasn't locked, though, you know what would happen to these SKUs. Those should do 4.1 to 4.2 Ghz without much issue. With the yields on 14nm being what they are, they don't want to burn through all of these parts, as they don't want to make to actually disable parts to meet supply.

As they are 14nm parts, no, they won't.

It will probably be more in the 3,7GHz rante, maybe even just 3,5GHz...

5 hours ago, Misanthrope said:

According to Hardware Unboxed these are locked so it actually made me throw up in my mouth a little bit: Fuck off AMD.

We are talking about a sub 100€ Part here.

For around double the price you can get an overclockable, 4 Core Ryzen 3 2200G.

And it's not Called RYZEN either (for exactly this reason). So why so angry??

Its not like the other side, where you have to pay a premium for specific overclockable parts...

AMD has a fairly massive market for APUs in 2nd & 3rd world countries. There's a reason why they keep making them. They go in all sorts of weird systems. AMD is also still a massive player in the embedded market. The SKUs aren't just for the Retail market, even if that's still AMD's big space that people notice them.

Exactly!

The Gaming Market is only a small parts and not even that lucrative. There are others that are more interesting...

And that's the Embedded/Industrial Stuff for example...

Funny, I'd just made a thread around clarity of the AMD CPUs and why some don't have integrated graphics. Seems like something more viable on lower-end chips.

Lower end is more for Office and embedded.

You don't really need 8 Cores there but an IGP is essential.

The 8 Cores are Server Dies.

You don't need 3D Graphics there and every Server comes with a combined 2D Graphics and Managment Combi Chip...

Because we're not talking about intel here (and even they have done very low budget unlocked CPUs before with the aniversary Pentium for example) my expectation for AMD in these kinds of cases is a lot higher. So with my that expectation my disappointment is similarly bigger.

Maybe that's a good problem to have for AMD to have us actually expect fairly competitive and good priced chips don't get me wrong, there's certainly a point to say "they're doing way better than intel" but I still think that having the option to overclock shouldn't be a matter of whenever it's a pricey part or not. We would definitively expect fairly poor overclockability as I said before but having the option to at least try should be there: getting lucky with a decent overclock is arguably more important for budget CPU parts where you can squeeze a bit more out of a really tight budget.

ähm, no?
Even the worst of those consoles has something like 786 Shaders, the other 1152 IIRC.

And Bandwith was around 68GB/Sec.

And with DDR4-2666 Memory we are talking about like ~40GB/Sec

As for the best IGP AMD has right now: 11 CU Clusters, 704 Shaders...

So no, its far from the XBox One due to Memory Limitations.

We need at least a quad channel Interface for that.

Or DDR-x 5866 - wich we won't see anytime soon - or HBM2...

Well if you're doing simple tasks (which is what most will buy this for I imagine), it'll be fine. I was just using a Core 2 Duo (3ghz) with 4GB of DDR2 a few months ago and the web still felt snappy, and even played a little max settings Minecraft. (It was Windows 7 though, so I dunno if that makes a difference.)

Now the second you throw in some multitasking like a discord call or having a browser open while playing a game, the experience would start to stutter I imagine.

you being on win 7 is part of why worked out ok, vista would be bad and so is win 10
