Rise of the Tomb Raider has 20% higher FPS on Linux than on Windows 10

ryao

Someone on Reddit reported yesterday that he is seeing 20% higher FPS on Linux than on Windows 10 in Rise of the Tomb Raider:

A person claiming to the be the developer who implemented Vulkan support posted in the discussion. @LinusTech might want to try Rise of the Tomb Raider in his upcoming Linux gaming video. He also probably could contact that person for more information about what is happening behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, Linus seems to have had me on ignore ever since I sent him a private message asking him to pronounce Xiaomi correctly, so I doubt he will see this thread. Maybe someone else from LMG could tell him about it.

Its not out yet, so how can he benchmark it?

The probable cause:
The Linux Version is free of the nVidia Stuff

The Linux Version is closer to the PS4 Version

I can download the linux native version of Rise of the Tomb Raider from Steam. Why do you think it is not out yet?

Ah, sorry, I confused them with Shadow of the Tomb Raider that comes out in 2 weeks or so. My bad.

Still, what's the Setup?
AMD?
nVidia?
What 3D API used under Windows??

If anything this is really just a case of the developer giving a crap about the implementation of the graphics rendering routines.

Did Nixxes handle the port for Linux? That would explain a lot if they did.

Oh well...

Since I am bored and happen to have RotR and a rather empty SSD, I gonna try it on my AMD RX480. And if I'm still bored I could grab a Tahiti as well...

Spec:
Ryzen 7/1700x

MSI B450I

Power Color RX480 Red Devil @ Default (has two BIOS, one performance with 1330MHz and a Silent one with Default Clocks)

Anyway, here the Results for Win10 DX12

Mountain Peak: 105,14 (66,25 - 162,39)

Syria: 79,33 (39 - 99,45)

Geothermal Valley: 78,59 (min 63,82 - 99,47)

Overall 88.15

Exclusive Fullscreen:

105,19 - 66,28 - 167,16

79,65 - 44,86 - 93,24

79,14 - 62,85 - 98,45

88,46

Exclusive DX11:
102,53 (min 61,86, max 196.24)

74,59 (min 13,74 max 123,59)

73,78 (min 21,59, max 91,91)

overall 84.15

Second try:
104,73 - 66,28 - 197,26

75,75 - 31,47 - 104,21

73,45 - 30,98 - 92,28

85,15

Linux to folow as I'm downloading a couple of Distros right now and have to download it. So that needs a couple of hours!

urgh, why do I have to be reminded why I don't like Linux (much) every time I use it...

Positive: Enlightenment looks nice, needs more investigation.

Negative: Had to start Steam with

LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6' LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1 steam

...and Screentearing at Default...

...and can't read exFAT out of the Box, ugh...

I'm on Opensuse Leap 15 (wich comes after 42, you know) right now.
And RotR is loading right now, should be ready in around 30min (god I love my 100MBit/sec line that is able to do ~11MiB/Sec right now)

As for the values:
85 - 49,66 - 124,29

66,14-29,99 - 86,19

65,69-51,1-85,22

average - min - max fps

Overall 72,64 fps

with the Open Source AMDGPU Driver - OpenSUSE Leap 15.

Kernel seems to be 4.12.14

Ubuntu is already on the USB Stick...

Just need to copy the Game to another drive and install UBuntu...

€dit:
Now for Ubuntu:
Mountain Peak: 87,37fps (49,74 - 121,17)

Syria: 64.67 (min 18,68-137.23)

Geothermal: 67,79 (min 54.18 - 86,44)

73,76fps overall

After Updates (Kernel 4.15.0-33-generic)

Mountain Peak: 87,74 (min 52,58 - max 198,86)

Syria: 67,04 (min 30,16 - max 80,86)

Geothermal Valley: 66,71 (min 47,37 - 86,60)

overall 74,20

Kernel 4.18.5

88.28 (54,08 - 173,15)

68,31 (26,68 - 117,16)

67,55 (48,5 - 88,2)

75,05

Now the AMDGPU-PRO (Proprietary) Driver under Ubuntu with the 4.15.0-33 kernel:

Mountain Peak: 103.33fps (62.83 min - 193.08 max)

Syria: 79,18fps (30,32 min - max 120,85)

Geothermal Valley: 78,38fps (min: 58,98, max 101,6)

Overall Score 87,37fps

Compared to the Windows 10/DX12 ones:

here the Results for Win10 DX12

Mountain Peak: 105,14 (66,25 - 162,39)

Syria: 79,33 (39 - 99,45)

Geothermal Valley: 78,59 (min 63,82 - 99,47)

Overall 88.15

So you can see that there isn't really much difference in this case and I'd call all those values on Windows and the Linux ones with the Proprietary (AMDGPU-PRO) driver identical.

BUT the Steam Cloud doesn't load your Windows Savegame for whatever reason :(

Don't seem that way on AMD for whatever reason.

Don't have a useful nVidia Graphics card (GK208 is pretty useless for this, isn't it?)

Hm, don't know and doesn't seem that way.

Maybe a bug in the nVidia Driver?

no, Feral did, big Logo at the Start of it...

PS: Don't have an nVidia Card that is usefull (at the moment, the only nVidia Cards I have are a 6800 something, an FX5200, somewhere I think I have a Geforce 2 MX and the newest one is a GT710 in my main File Serverish thing.
