Should I upgrade from R290x too later gen.

I am wondering if I should Upgrade from my R290x to something newer or would I be bottlenecked by FX8350? It does not have HDMI 2.0 support Amd I have to run Display port 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 to get 4k 60Hz.

You will likely want to upgrade both GPU and CPU at the same time once you get to upgrading your system.

290X is still quite good GPU.

You should really get a new CPU before you even think about a new GPU.

a new CPU should be first. the FX chip will hold back your GPU some.

If its 4K 60Hz for video (anything that doesnt need computing power), just add a new low end card like the RX550 or GT 1030 will do, dont need to change the rest.

Chances are if you're playing at 1080p your FX CPU is probably already holding back your 290X a fair bit in many games...upgrade your CPU first and go from there.

I do play GTA 4 and 5 at times. Sometimes I run Dolphin and PCSX2 emulators. It seems OK for that. I was having video trouble at start up with Accel Active Display 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 adapter. Sometimes the video would be black sometime scrambled, other time at 30 Hz. I can definitely see 30Hz on a 50" 4K TV. 60 is Much smoother for everything. I don't even know why 60 Hz was omitted on early displays. 

 

Anyway I switched the adapter to a Startech active adapter and it seems to be working OK. Output must be on Displayport to achieve 60Hz. HDMI revision is too early. HDMI 2.0 should have been standard on all cards after HD 7970.

 

GTA 5 will take toll on R290x, and drop below 60FPS in some instances.
