Best use for a secondary PC

Shally
Go to solution Solved by Majinhoju,

Playing around with other operating systems.

Hook up to the living from TV for some couch gaming or steamlink if your current pc is way more powerful.

Media server.

I have a 2nd computer in my lounge room.

Just a Ryzen 2600x and a msi gtx 1060 gaming x.

Perfect for streaming movies and the odd kick back in a recliner and play games on the tv.

Not exactly. Tuition doesn't pay for your stay on campus, that's a seperate expense if you choose to do that

If they advertise "High speed internet included" then yes, but if the Internet isn't mentioned then that would be complimentary. In my opinion.

IF you stay on campus and pay room and board, which most college students do, part of room and board goes to paying the utilities. To give an example, lets say you find an apartment with water included in the cost. Would you be fine if they said you can only take showers on tuesday and fridays to conserve water. even though the water is included, it's still in the cost somewhere, so you're still paying for it. You are paying for access to the water, so why would you let them tell you when you can or can't take a shower?

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Okay it's not "room and board" here, it's more "Oh also, we have our own accommodation here if you want it, but we limit the internet so everyone can use it effectively."
I'm not saying I agree with it, and I never did it, but that's how it works.

it may be there, but when i went to college, it was part of room and board. you could see it itemized, so i was literally paying for it

I think the above had all the answers, it all down to what you need extra a extra pc for: a Linux machine, a NAS, a media server, a streaming PC, rendering server, fold@home, foot rest, hamster cage…

So I bought a bunch of parts for my girlfriend to build a PC to play games on, but since she's moving into a college campus she'll have poor internet with things like Steam naturally blocked. She likely wouldn't be using it much in college either since she has a decent laptop for doing work so I want to re purpose this PC.

I don't want to sell it, but if I do I'll likely put it on on some classifieds as parts but I'd really like to find some use for it, any suggestions?

Watch porn with it. Use its hard drive space exclusively for porn. Set up a home server to stream porn. Run it 24/7 to download porn.

Wouldn't it be closer to "you get water but can't take longer then 15 minute showers"?

you'd be paying for the cleaning supplies too, would you get to decide how the janitor cleans the floors?

I see your point, but I guess I just don't think Steam is exactly a necessity. . .

although thinking about it more, that would be really annoying:

"Hey I just got a new game on Steam! I'm going to go to the nearby restaurant with wifi to download it!"

1. you wouldn't be paying for cleaning supplies. You would be paying for the building to have a janitor on staff doing his job. The company employing the janitor pays for the cleaning supplies. You only pay for the job in that case.

2. Steam is not a necessity, but freedom is in my opinion. If i pay for the internet, I should be able to choose what i do with it, same as at home. if your home internet said "i'm sorry but your neighborhood is congested right now, we're going to restrict yours your the rest of the day to save bandwidth" you'd be yelling at them. if they don't have the infrastructure to handle their own customers, that's their fault not mine. I'm not going to pay for restrictions. If were talking free wifi on campus walking around when you're supposed to be in class or heading to/from class, that's fine, that's part of the larger infrastructure and it's meant for use during school hours. Inside the dorm though, on the connection i pay for, i am off the clock per say. I don't have to be doing homework or writing a paper. It's my time to use or waste as I see fit. If I want to play a game til 4 in the morning (speaking from experience sadly) and miss a class, that's my decision and my consequences. Freedom is a necessity

I get where you're coming from, but you also have to remember that if you have a lot of people streaming and downloading games, it bottlenecks the traffic to the system.

Some systems are well equipped to handle the traffic, however it does tend to reduce download speed and people complain.

I fully understand by the college to implement a blanket rule of no steam downloads allowed.

Just my two cents though, let me know your opinion.

Cheers

@OP I'd still give it to your GF but also buy her a VPN subscription (NordVPN is good), the extra lag isn't a big issue and you can tell her to talk to the college

Free NAS system. You can upgrade the storage drive and maybe sell the GPU or keep it thats up to you.

Its the colleges network. If you dont like their network policies then you can live off campus and pay for your own internet. Thats how it works. You dont own the network, so you dont have any say in how they restrict access.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Usually Campus wifi is meant for education, and its often used in halls for freshers. It's pretty standard practice to block certain websites on networks like these - especially as the same network is used for the library of the campus etc and study spaces. It's especially annoying for someone to be playing games in spaces for studying, if you are playing games at uni then why even bother coming. I don't mind what you do at the hall though, but when hundreds of people are using the same network and trying to study, while some people just play games or download movies, its pretty frustrating. It is also their university policy probably, like no alcohol zones.

Use it as a streaming computer. The CPU is more than enough to stream some decent games

i never claimed that money i exchanged for a good that was then exchanged for a different good meant i bought the secondary good, that makes no sense. I did pay for the internet at my college, my fees included it itemized, so i was directly paying for it.

Oooh okay, misunderstanding, okay, if you see "internet $25" then yes, you should absolutely get to use it however you choose, but, if that isn't there, then it would be considered free internet and them restricting it would be understandable, so depending on the policies of the campus the OP is talking about, it may or may not be reasonable. . .

An old PC is also a great opportunity to learn more about how websites work by running your own web server. If you're currently running a WordPress blog with a custom URL that only you and your mom read, why not try managing the whole enchilada yourself? You'll save that $100 you spend every year on hosting, and you'll soon be acquainted with the ins and outs of the LAMP stack.

I like the advice, but I'm a comp sci major and that's basically my job so I think I'll pass on that!
