bought 10$(US) pc now i want to upgrade pieces of it.

I bought a PC from a garage sale for $10. The guy said it was a gaming PC but, I wasn't getting my hopes up for too much. It actually turned out to be a pretty good machine.

It has a 1st gen i7 950, It has an ASUS P6T6 WS REVOLUTION Workstation motherboard, 12 GB DDR3-1600 RAM. I put in my SSD and HDD into it. (It came with a 120GB SSD and a 500GB HDD but didn't include an OS)

It has an HD 5750 which I overclocked to 850mhz.

I can't tell what kind of case it is. It has both Thermaltake and Ibuypower logos on it. There is a sticker that says "Ibuypower I series 901" I looked this up and it just showed me a prebuilt core 2 duo pc. This case ins't bad but it feels old. I don't like that it doesn't have a cutout behind the motherboard to change the CPU cooler. But, it does already have a hyper 212 on it so I don't think cooling is much of an issue.

It has a 1250 watt unbranded power supply that hasn't caught on fire yet, which is good. (I'm still keeping a fire extinguisher nearby)

I would like to replace the Graphics card but I'm not sure what this CPU can handle. I was thinking of a gtx 1060 or something similar. Even something used would be fine if i could get it for a good price. I really don't want to spend more that 300$US. I am using one 1080p monitor.

Here is a link to the user benchmark score for this pc.

That's a pretty damn good deal for that much hardware!

I'm not sure either what that first gen i7 can still handle, but I'd assume that a 4GB 1050Ti should be fine.

Then you should be able to play all games at 1080p at medium-high settings.

Thats a good idea. Although Gtx 970s are about the same price on ebay right now. This CPU might be able to handle that.

It can run with a 1050 Ti easily. My i7 950 rig runs games like Battlefront 2015 and such at 60fps on med/low, that's with a GTX 660. It ran fine on hihg/ultra with a 1050 2GB though, I assume it'd do the same with a 1050 Ti. If you guys really want benchmarks I can throw a 980 Ti or possibly even a 1080 in there and see how it performs.

You've got a pretty decent upgrade path, X58/LGA 1366 hardware is pretty cheap and fairly easy to come by.

This is my first Intel box so I'm not too familiar with the upgrade path for this cpu.

Also, thats good to know it can handle a 1050ti easily.

Im not sure, but can I put any same generation i7 into this socket? If so an i7 975 extreme looks compelling and are only about 40$US

I'd pass on any 1st gen i7s, the one you have now is decent but you can get a better IPC on a newer CPU. Look for something like a Xeon X5675 or so, I ran one and it's an amazing CPU for the price, and IIRC is from about 2011 or so. I OCed mine to 4-4.5GHz and it was dope, but I eventually borked my RAM or something because I have no idea what I'm doing so I just bought an R7 2700X.

Would i need a new motherboard for a newer cpu like the Xeon X5675?

Probably not, the X5675 is an X58 CPU as well, and if your mobo says it supports 6 core i7s (just google it and go to ASUS' page on it, they should brag about that) then you're fine. X58 Xeons are just higher binned enterprise versions of the i7s. You can ask on the thread in my sig as well, the guys who frequent that know a lot more than me about the different boards and such.

Bargain of the century right here. I have to start visiting garage sales.

The i7 950 is still a pretty decent performer for 1080p 60fps.. There's not a huge difference between the i7 950 and i7 975, so I'd say stick with the i7 950 since you got it for essentially nothing.

If you wanted to upgrade the CPU though, your motherboard does support Xeon processors from that generation. Supports 6 core CPUs as well so if you really wanted to upgrade it, I'd look at the Xeon X5650 - X5690 range and see what the cost are for those.

GPU could do with an upgrade if you wanted to play some more graphically intensive games. Any used 3GB VRAM card would be pretty decent. If you wanted to buy new then I wouldn't bother going any higher than a 1050ti. Older stuff like a 950/960 or 760/760ti would also be a great fit if you can find some legitimate cards for sale nearby.

Might be worthwhile upgrading the power supply though if you have your doubts about it. If you are planning on swapping over to one of the 6 core Xeons and planning on overclocking it, I'd recommend a good quality 450W unit if you're keeping your current GPU or going a GTX1050/ti. Probably want a decent 550W unit if you're planning on getting an older, more power hungry GPU like an AMD HD7970 2nd hand.

I agree. This cpu is still pretty good. In fact it's better than my previous fx6300. Though, I can get a 6 core x5670 cpu for around $40 on ebay. If i did that, im hoping i might posibly be able to get a slightly better gpu. I'm hoping for something like a 1060 6GB, but I think I'm being too optimistic. This hd 5750 is better than my gt440 that i had in my previous build. so I am noticing better performance in games.

I think i will need to upgrade the power supply. Its been getting hot, plus 1250 watts is just too much.

Also i found out what case it is. Its a Thermaltake Armor+ MX VH8000BWS .

I had a Masterliquid lite 120 from a previous build that i wanted to put into this computer. However I'm not sure it will fit so I think I will have to do with the hyper 212.

I think 250-300$US will make this pc a Very good 1080p 60fps machine.

Ive been researching a little bit. Maybe a Rx 580 would be better than a 1060 for this system.

Also my motherboard is at the latest bios version, so i wouldn't have to change that if I replaced the processor.

Damn that was a steal, honestly I would wait for the new nvidia gpus to hit the market and see how much do they drop the older card prices in the used market.

I thought the same thing. But the FPS per dollar is still kinda low because of the bad gpu.

Quick look at Newegg and you should be able to find some new RX 580s starting at $230, vs the $270 starting price for the 1060 6GBs.
1050tis start at $170 though and would be fine for 1080p 60fps gaming.

Used cards like GTX 960, or even GTX 970 if you wanted more performance will be even cheaper. Quick look on Craigslist and I can see a handful of GTX 960s for $120 & $125, but there's a GTX 970 4GB for $130. There's even an R9 380 4GB for $100 OBO.

All of those would be great for 1080p gaming, and half the cost of a new RX580.

Spoiler

(Not sure if I'm allowed to link to craigslist ads on LTT, so here's screenshots instead. If interested just search your area for GTX 960, GTX 970, HD 7970, HD7870, R9 280, R9 380, etc)

*Update*

I just put a new cpu cooler in it.

It is a Cooler master masterliquid lite 120.

It has been keeping the temps about 10C cooler than the hyper 212 when idle and under load.

Also I noticed my gpu is about 2-3C cooler which is an unexpected benefit.
