Help me build a gaming pc!!! $800 -$1200

Flemmingo

1. Budget & Location

$800-$1200 more or less, USA, Seattle, WA Specifically

2. Aim

Gaming, Projects from my college (Computer Science or Engineering), For gaming, Im exploring newer games but Im likely to play League of Legends, PUBG, Fortnite, and explore new RPG/Action games

3. Monitors

I will buy one monitor, recommend me a budget but decent one.

4. Peripherals

I need windows, a budget gaming keyboard and mouse and headphones as well

5. Why are you upgrading?

I have a laptop.. I want a good desktop that is decent and can be upgradable in the future and can last for a few years without much bottleneck too. I want to play games with higher fps and be able to multitask for once.

May consider overclocking but wouldnt mind if a processor is not overclockable. (4 cores minimum)

Minimum GPU: RX 580, GTX 1060

I have done a little bit on research on desktop computers but I do not know how components will fit thus I am asking for recommendations of parts that are compatible with one another.

PS: I am also open to any prebuilt pcs recommendations within the budget under good value because I have never built a PC before but I am willing to learn to build one if it is a much cheaper and worth it alternative.

I would recommend waiting for the announcement of the new nvidia gpus.

They might push the prices a bit or be worth buying themselves.

If you don't want to wait a few weeks or so for the new GPU's then something like this:

I'm not good with headsets so I left that out but you can drop the 1070Ti down to something like the 2060 or 2070 when those release to shave the cost down and fit a headset in the $1200 budget.

If you're going Ryzen (and if you want to do CompSci/Engineering stuff, those extra cores and threads could come in very handy), then 3200Mhz RAM is a nice investment.

You could get one of those "grey market" Windows keys from reddit and save some money there.

on ryzen the faster ram makes a difference in cpu performance.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Thanks I might consider the windows key because I never expected OS to be so expensive

The 1060 replacement is likely October or November. Nvidia normally staggers releases.

I would hold off a bit, see what the 2070 prices are announced at and maybe go with that.

For both Intel & AMD, 2800 to 3000 is actually where things settle out for memory. Yes, faster & lower latency is better, but you normally need high-end GPU to actually see any measurable difference beyond that point. And both platforms respond to some memory tuning passes.

I'd plan everything but the GPU, then wait until next week to find out the schedule. In theory, it might drive the prices down once the dates are announced.

Why are Ryzen 5 2600s a better choice than something like a i5 8400 or an i3 8350k

So this is a little over your mark. I want to elaborate on why. If you were willing to use gray area market places you could get windows for about 10 bucks... so that shaves off about 110 and brings your total to 1290. If you can squeeze out the extra 90 all is well... if not you can down grade to a less hz monitor or chance up the peripherals. I mean you could also drop the ram to 8gb and hit the mark too.... but I would keep the 8500 for your cpu. You could save another 50ish to go with an AMD offering, but I think the 8500 will be your best bet for gaming.
