It depends on what TIM was use. Some of them actually tell you to spread the time and provide a small spreader like this one....http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002P5W4RU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=419CPRZ90JL7&coliid=I2L9JRP58URV9B

What TIM did you use @Callmedragon?

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Usually worth it to tint the top of the copper (heatsink) but not like AS says, with a razor blade and all that crap.

Dot on the heatsink and wipe off excess with a coffee filter to fill gaps and you don't need to let it dry. All you are doing here is getting paste in gaps. Nothing more. Dot in middle of cpu and let cooler do work on installation. Dot should be BB sized not pea sized cus that is too much.

Tinting the CPU? Pointless. Also the higher quality heatsink, tinting the copper means less. If the copper is completely flat with no gaps? A dot on the cpu is just fine.

If you are taking more then like 30 seconds combined to tint a cooler apply the paste to CPU, you are just making it hard on yoursefl and probably adding a few degrees to temps due to air bubbles.

Tinting something like a EVO is worth it, cus they have lines in between the copper. A high quality cooler with a flat surface, I wouldn't bother.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. Fullspreadclampedwithairbubbles.JPG

The manual Spreading of a compound is highly discouraged; the manipulation, folding of the compound, as well as surface iregularities will add air into the final assembly.

This assembly shows bubbles of air that, under thermal load, will expand and migrate together creating voids that affect thermal performance and reliability

It was written for IC diamond, but this part is valid for most TIMs.

Wait...what CPU cooler are you even using?
Block? Are you using water-cooling?

Arctic Silver 5 is moderately thick (friggin' used it for years) , but you don't need to spread it. The pressure from the heatsink mounting system will be PLENTY to spread the thermal paste out.

An xspc raystorm block yes it's liquid cooled I was getting 27 degrees idle now I'm getting 35-37 and I'm starting to get pissed... And I was using some thermaltake paste before (non-conductive forgot what it was called)

Idle temps are not important, it's the load temps that matter.

Oh, absolutely no need to spread the thermal paste; just the size of a grain of uncooked rice in the middle and you're ready to go.

The water block is "flat" and has no gaps (i.e. found on direct touch heatpipes).

Well i was getting like 32-34 load before, last night I had a 4 hour DayZ session and was at 42. I know these temps are fine its just annoying that they went up so much and they shouldnt have and the main reason i want low temps is because i HATE fan noise... Im going to try and re-seat the processor tomorrow or something ill post back here.

Make sure to clean the paste off BOTH the CPU and the block before applying a new application.

Make sure the mounting (i.e. backplate and screws) are secure.

Make sure the radiator and fans are clean from dust.

Okay so i redid the application. Im at 34 degrees ATM but im sure that could just be because i need to give it 2-3 days to spread. Here is a picture of how much i used

That's about all the thermal paste you need to cover the CPU.

Arctic Silver 5 doesn't have a needed "spreading" time, but it DOES have a "burn-in" / "break-in" time before it reaches maximum performance. According to Arctic Silver, it can take up to 200 hours.
