Hi guys i want to buy a "Crucial - MX500 1TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive" on my new build. The motherboard will be "Asus - ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING ATX"

My part list : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7Jc6q4

However on PCpartpicker it says "The motherboard M.2 slot #2 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled."

My question is what does this mean? Is it a bad thing that I'm getting the mx500 in m.2 version on this mobo or should i just get the 2.5. Right now they are the same price and i wanted to get the m.2 one because of less wires :)

Any help would be great.

Thanks xx

When using a SATA M.2 SSD, the motherboard will turn 1 of the 6 SATA ports off (because the bandwidth for that port is used by the M.2 SSD). This is just a reminder by PCPartPicker, but it really makes sense. A 2.5" drive will use a SATA, so will an M.2 SATA (it will use the port internally).

So basically your thought of choosing an M.2 for less wires is the though you should have behind it.

Honestly the Crucial MX500 is no faster than a SATA SSD in reality. If you can find a SATA SSD for cheaper go for it. Or save more and get a fast m.2.

The MX500 is a SATA SSD.

Id look at the 660p aswell, should be faster for about the same pice as its a pcie nvme drive.

Seems to be slower, quite significantly in some cases.

Yes but in an m.2. I want to make sure he knows it's not an NVMe ssd or that he doesn't expect it to be faster than a 2.5 inch ssd

MX500 is one of the best SATA SSDs while being very price competitive with the other ones.

Its only a bit slower in random 4k read/write speeds vs a more expensive lower end NVME.

Just go for it OP, it will only disable one of the SATA ports on your MoBo.

Saying it's no faster than a SATA SSD implies that it's not a SATA SSD. Using M.2 and NVMe interchangeably just leads to confusion and misinformation

This is 100% right. Many folks don't realize the difference and that SATA exists in more than one form factor.

The destroyer isn't the best simulation of most consumer workloads. If you look at the light or heavy workloads it does much better than a sata ssd. It slows down when very full, but don't have your system extremly full and your fine.

I think the m.2 just sold out.

You gotta love finding good deals on toys you wanna buy. I got a lot of my components that way and it makes it that much more satisfying.
