GTX 970 vs GTX 1060 3GB for similar price (used)

Hi!

My friend is building a budget gaming pc, and we setteled for an i5-8400 and a used graphics card. For budget options the best bets are the GTX 970 and GTX 1060 3GB on the used market in my country, both going for around 190-215$. New 1060 3gb is 300$, others are much more expensive. I know that the 1060 3GB is slightly more powerfull, but the vram is less. I am also conserned about the miner 1060-s, because it was really popular for mining here. He will mostly play PUBG, GTA 5, CS GO.

Pros and Cons appreciated.

Thanks!

The system:

Gigabyte B360M H

i5-8400

2x4GB gskill DDR4 2666 MHz

256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD

EVGA 500 B1

I mounted a pc for a friend with low budget and he's playing pubg at 60+ fps with a 7500 and a 1050ti so anything same or better will have a good gaming experience

I won't try used 1060 that could be used for mining.

most mining cards were used in better condtions - undervolting, decent psu, good cooling; than most of gaming cards, if it has warranty then I see now trouble in buying mining card

Very funny. Those mining cards I have seen were dusty. And no doubt, they overclock as much as they can. Many manufacturers claim that they refuse to provide warranty to mined cards.

In Poland and eu generally you have really rigid law regarding warranty claims,I was talking about buying from serious miners, not kids.

I'm around 60-70 on my laptop with a 1050Ti. Although, if I remember correctly the gpu is a down-clocked notebook laptop.

I know a guy yesterday playing with him with a 1060 6gb laptop and a 7700hq playing with stutters worse than a 970 or 1050ti desktop

The only manufacturer I know that did that is also one of the worst gpu companies and they have been scamming people with warranties for years.. PNY.

Also the people that were overclocking them were amateurs so steer clear of them. The actually miners of the world knew that undervolting was the only way to fly because you could get similar hash rates, but shave money off your monthly energy bill so you ended up being more profitable in the end... and if you were doing this on a large scale the savings was HUGE.

Yeah not sure why it does every once in awhile. Theoretically it should run low with really good frames, and mine also has a 7700hq and an ssd.

So something nvidia has been doing with laptop cards that some people didn't know. They release them with lower frequency rates, but give them more cuda cores so they can perform similar to desktop cards in some circumstances. They don't do it to all the laptop cards you see, but the higher end laptops have these cards in them. Ill try to dig up a few examples

Yeah we tried to solve that lowering specs or with new smooth sync on pubg but no chance (with external or without external monitor its gpu or cpu related)
