Q6600 cant run portal 1 (orange box)

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

It's the GMA 3000 graphics man. They are just painfully bad, you won't get anything running on it. Get a cheap GPU like a HD 7700 for around $40. It should breathe new life into that system.

I got this old dell with a Q6600 , 4gb of ram, intel GMA 3000 graphics and I wanted it to play some old games like portal and half life for my 12 year old nephew but by some reason the pc wont run portal properly even on the lowest resolution and settings the game doesn't stop stuttering and it looks like it runs at 2fps. I was checking the minimum requirements for this game that I was quite sure that the pc would run and the requirements are the following:

Here are the Portal system requirements (minimum)

  • CPU: 1.7 GHz Processor
  • CPU SPEED: 1.7 GHz
  • RAM: 512 MB
  • OS: Windows 7 (32/64-bit)/Vista/XP
  • VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce3+ / ATI Radeon 8500+
  • SOUND CARD: Yes

Portal Recommended Requirements

  • CPU: Pentium 4
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • OS: Windows 7 (32/64-bit)/Vista/XP
  • VIDEO CARD: DirectX 9 level Graphics Card (GeForce FX 5500/Radeon 9500)
  • SOUND CARD: Yes

So it seems that this pc meets the requirements and I cant figure out why the game doesn't run well. Can someone help me please? thanks in advance!

Uh....you probably need an actual video card.  GMA 3000 is only meant for drawing the desktop and maybe 480p youtube videos.  It's not meant for gaming.

Workstation:  13700k @ 5.5Ghz || Gigabyte Z790 Ultra || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || TeamGroup DDR5-7800 @ 7000 || Corsair AX1500i@240V || whole-house loop.

LANRig/GuestGamingBox: 9900nonK || Gigabyte Z390 Master || ASUS TUF 3090 650W shunt || Corsair SF600 || CPU+GPU watercooled 280 rad pull only || whole-house loop.

Server Router (Untangle): 13600k @ Stock || ASRock Z690 ITX || All 10Gbe || 2x8GB 3200 || PicoPSU 150W 24pin + AX1200i on CPU|| whole-house loop

Server Compute/Storage: 10850K @ 5.1Ghz || Gigabyte Z490 Ultra || EVGA FTW3 3090 1000W || LSI 9280i-24 port || 4TB Samsung 860 Evo, 5x10TB Seagate Enterprise Raid 6, 4x8TB Seagate Archive Backup ||  whole-house loop.

Laptop: HP Elitebook 840 G8 (Intel 1185G7) + 3080Ti Thunderbolt Dock, Razer Blade Stealth 13" 2017 (Intel 8550U)

I thought that it was almost impossible to find a computer that doesn't run these games :o

i mean if you dropped the resolution to 800x600 or something it'd probably be "playable".

Dropping an old graphic card into it will allow you to not only play these old games, but a variety of more modern ones if you are prepared to settle with lower settings.

I have a PC in my garage using a Q9505 and a GTX 750. This is able to play WoW, Fortnite, and several other games just fine. You can definitely breath some life into the old PC with a new graphics card. Throw in another 4gb of RAM if you have it also.

Which graphics card do you think would be the best one for this processor without causing a bottleneck?. I can "overclock" it through the front side bus or with some tape :D
