I still need to watch that movie but yes exactly.

My hopes are that I can still see such a thing happen, VR is step one what follows is hopefully even more immersive :)

Yeah, I meant that the new cars might  interfere with the traffic we already have. And what about bird strikes?

If you make those planes to actual perspective to the map there would be microscopic dots. (Showing there is plenty of space) 

 

Hell if you were to put cars into that blown up view you would think there are a bunch of car accidents.

We have trains that span the entire US already though. Also countries like China have donated Billions to the US to help us build it but we didn't do anything with it

The difference between the US and Europe is the distance the trains are taking. The US is only slightly smaller than the continent of Europe, meaning the trains are going much much greater distances. You also have to take into consideration where the population is. On both sides of the US theyre generally in between mountains and the ocean, with little room to grow except up. This means putting trains in is almost impossible because of space limitations. Same thing on the west coast, where there is huge spans of mountains separating everything

There is indeed a sizable rail network in the US.  Unfortunately, most of it is limited to no more than 80mph (much of it a lot less).  Some of that could be fixed with a properly banked turns, but most of the right-of-ways have too much elevation gain and too tight of curves as well.

 

However, that doesn't mean it's not possible (you really don't want high speed transit on your freight routes anyway), only that it's going to cost some money.  California's bullet train project has hit $10b for 120 miles of track.  If you wanted to connect the major west coast cities, say: Vancouver BC to San Diego, then you need about 1200 miles of rail.  Using California as an example (not necessarily appropriate, but it's what I could find in a hurry), that would cost around $100b.

 

That seems like a lot: freeways cost $5m - $10m per mile which would put the cost of 4 lanes of I-5 built today at around a tenth that, but it could also potentially generate more income than a freeway (in addition to being faster).

 

I think it's absolutely doable; getting people to agree on it and pay for it is the real trick.

God no I am not saying slap high speed trains on the same tracks. I was replying to the comment that it would be too hard to make a track across the US. Well we already have them. But you are right we would need much different tech

Planes and helicopters have the same dangers you may point out, they however are produced by professional companies, are carefully checked and follow industry standards as well as requiring a complex test for a licence to be completed, not your average Joe with 5 weeks training.

For these to become legit your gonna need super light carbon fibre + crash bags, plus probably a parachute? Those props and wings look too small for auto rotation/glide landings. :(

Normally when I think of cars, I think of something with wheels, and can travel on land. This looks more like a flying boat.

IMO, when personal flying vehicles becomes affordable and transport cost is economically viable, I think most, if not all, should be autonomous piloting like current self-driving cars. A few dozens meters up in the air, far below where commercial planes fly, will be filled with lanes for these personal flying vehicles. Lanes invisible to the human eye but used by the self-piloting ai.

In my opinion, a 100% AI controlled transport system, with some human overwatching it, should be far safer and reliable than our current car based transport system.

it's basically a modified drone .  i wouldn't call it a flying car.  we should probably call a bus with 2 wings  and a thruster a flying bus .. or .. you know.. an Airbus. :|

Very true, but they would need to do some serious GPS system on the cars to make sure no one randomly runs off rail and start crashing everywhere. 

 

Honestly, i don't see air cars to be a thing until they make it automated, we have enough trouble getting people driving properly on the ground let alone the air.
