Google admits they wanted to buy GitHub but lost to Microsoft

AlTech

Google has admitted they wanted to buy GitHub but ultimately lost to Microsoft due to GItHub's CEO's relationship with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

A Google executive has admitted the search giant lost out on buying GitHub. Speaking at a Fortune Magazine event yesterday, Diane Greene Google’s head of cloud made an interesting admission. “I wouldn’t have minded buying them, but it’s OK,” said Greene, Bloomberg reports.

The Verge asked Google earlier this month to comment on whether it will still continue to use GitHub, but a company spokesperson said at the time “We do not comment on ongoing acquisitions across the industry.” Facebook has committed to GitHub, and a spokesperson revealed: “as along as GitHub remains a great place to share our projects and collaborate with the open source community, we’ll continue to use it.”

Greene also echoed similar concerns from developers about Microsoft buying GitHub and its future. “I really hope Microsoft can keep them totally neutral,” said Greene.

So yeah, it seems Google also wants Microsoft to keep out of GitHub management and they want GitHub to remain a "neutral" place.

Personally, I don't think GitHub should have sold out although allegedly GitHub wasn't making tons of profit and was losing money.

No, but Microsoft uses Github heavily. Someone else buying, particularly Google, is less than ideal.

The hate against big companies is always funny to watch.

Those evil villains got so rich and big, even tho no one likes them and all their products are bad as well! Also they will (all) take over the world once they know our birthdays!

I really don't even know what to say anymore.

On topic tho:

I doubt microsoft has more cash then google, they just wanted it more than google did.

Actually i am uncertain how this would help microsoft in the long term. They know, if they change too much (read, anything at all really), people will leave the platform and just move to GitLab, which is kinda the same but better anyways. If they don't change stuff,.. why buy it? They could have used it for like 1000s of years and still be cheaper off.

My guess is that either MS just wants the service and so don't really care if it makes money or not, or the not making money issue is something MS can fix without changing how it operates.

Am I the only one wondering why the deciding factor was the relationship between CEOs? At that price range, one would assume the best offer would win.

Money talks,  at the worst all the relationship means is that there was probably money under the table as well as on it.

That's the only explanation. Just found it odd that "ultimately Google lost due to the relationship between the CEO of Github and Microsoft". Either that's wrong or they worked together to make sure Microsoft's offer was the best one.

I guess it's possible that this relationship was purely a business relationship that carried a genuine value on it's own. But not sure I totally buy that.

Oh thank god. Google has a horrible track record of shutting things down randomly and without warning.

Well microsoft is not famous for suport or good implementation of 3rd party (now 1st?) software, Version crontrol is a nightmare on windows (visual studio, sql express, sql management studio....) Its like rng , 2017 version works with 2012 but 2012 doesnt with 2014 but visual works 2015 with sql 2017 , a pain in the ass....
