i7 7700k vs i7 8700k

I’ve been looking at the i7 7700k and the i7 8700k. I know that the 8700k has 2 more cores and 4 more threads but does it really make a huge difference? I’m only using the pc for gaming right now. I am going with a 1080 Ti so I want to make sure that they play nice with each other.

You won't notice a difference in games. Drop the extra $35 or so that you'll save and get a better cooler or some extra case fans. (or just save it)

For gaming you'll see no advantage outside of benchmark scores. However, I agree will Penguin above, the 8600k has 6 physical cores without hyperthreading, which will still beat the 4 physical cores with hyperthreading in most workloads, including gaming.

Absolutely true, I did however presume he specifically looking at K series becuase he's going to overclock. If not, yeah, save a whole bunch of cash with the 8400.

just to clarify, you do realize these two cpu's will not work in the same motherboards.  7700k will work on z170 and z270.  the 8th gen chips require z370

If you were looking at a 7700K then get an 8600K instead. Those cores will make more of a difference in games than those few extra threads.

There are games that can take advantage of the higher core count of the 8700K over the 7700K but, as of right now, there aren't too many.

In games? Not really, games will still benefit a lot more from the higher clocks on 7700k rather that from two extra physical cores on the 8400.

What is your budget/country

what do you need the PC for

what is your monitor resolution/refresh rate?

Well I use 1 1440p and 1 1080p because when I bought them I had a budget and now I see no use of upgrading them because they work perfectly.

From the numerous benchmarks and reviews that I have seen/read, this just isn't the case. In terms of price/performance absolutely, the 8400 and, subsequently, the i5 8600K both represent significant strides towards better bang for your buck. However, in terms of absolute performance the i7 7700K will still beat out the locked Coffee Lake i5s in most games and benchmarks, even in multi threaded workloads, especially when overclocked. Granted this is in the 5-10 percent range at the high end, but that's still notable I would think. My i7 6700K @ 4.5GHz is marginally slower than the i5 8600K at stock clocks and marginally faster than the i5 8400. When overclocked to about 4.7GHz it slightly outperforms a stock clocked 8600K. When you overclock the 8600K though it does pull ahead by about the same margin as the 7700K vs the 8400, about 10 percent, perhaps even a bit more, say about 15 percent. I would submit, however, that 4c/8t compares quite favorably to 6c/6t in most benchmarks.

If you dont have a Z170 or Z270 mobo, it's obviously the 8700k, every time. If you do... still 8700k. Just because it will stay relevant for much longer.

If you have no budget just get the 8700K, maybe get it pre-delidded from silicon lottery so you have better temps.

Or just get an R7 2700X, may be more useful if you wanted a silent PC.

7700k is more than enough for games but the problem is 7700k is the end of the line. You cant upgrade. The only reason to buy a 7700k now is cheap motherboards or for using DDR3L.

Dam if the 7700k is no different in gaming, think I’ll grab one. Retire this 4770k.
Given the usage my 8700k sees in a simple FPS I wouldn’t want any cpu that doesn’t perform the same or better. Especially if I have a 1080 ti instead of a 1080.
