Should I get a new CPU or build a new system?

Hi Everyone !! :):)

Hope you all well.

I am little new to the current market. My last build was around 5 to 6 years ago.

Recently I purchased a Asus GTX 1080 A8G with promo.

Question: Should I get a new CPU or build a new system or new monitor ?

Long term goal: playing VR game with HTC VIVE pro and play game on 4k setting or maybe ultra 4k.

Short term goal: play current games on high setting such as rise of the tomb raider, PUBG , Skyrim, middle earth shadow of war, battlefield 1, grand theft auto V , fallout 4 , assassin creed origins,  Far cry 5, state of decay 2, the forest , Fortnite (battle Royale), Kingdom come :Deliverance , Wolfenstein 2 the new colossus, Divinity: orginal sin 2, superhot ,outlast 2, dark souls 3 , mass effect andromeda and final fantasy XV.

Current specs. ( 4 to 5 years system)

- CPU intel i5-4570
- Asus Z87-C LGA 1150
- Corsair 8G Kit 1866 VEN PRO C9
- NZXT white Phantom 410
- FSP650W platinum PSU
- Toshiba 3TB 3.5'' 7200rpm
- Samsung 2.5' 120G 840 EVO
- Asus Gtx 670 2GB
- asus vg278q ( not sure if i need a new monitor to optimize the card like Acer predator x34 UWQHD or asus predator but it looks over kill)

I am so confuse at the moment there is so many option on the markets. It will be awesome if i can get some expert advice from everyone.

Many thanks,
Kool rabbit

Hey.

If you have budget, you should definitely buy new system (New CPU,Mobo and RAM). Get I7 8700k, 8 or 16GB RAM and motherboard that you prefer.

Getting 4th gen Intel CPU is not a good idea because it will bottleneck your's GTX 1080.

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus ROG Strix B650E / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Powercolor RX 7900 XTX Red Devil/ EVGA 750W GQ / NZXT H5 Flow

Your current system + 1080 is still good for gaming. Maybe upgrade to 16G ram, but not necessary.

If your goal is going for 4K, you will need to get a new monitor.

I would sure get an extra  SSD for gaming, faster loading speed.

upgrading the CPU would certainly be one solution but to be honest for what you want to do you need more than one 1080 so im not sure if it makes much sense to upgrade the CPU now.

with one single 1080 you will not be able to play brand new games in 4K on high settings at least not with very smooth FPS.

For the Vive the GPU should be fine because Steam VR is good at scaling resolution to keep the FPS stable at 90, depending on the game this might be where you run into a bottleneck.

If you have the funds and dont care about the money it would certainly help to upgrade to a ryzen or 8700k but i personally wouldnt spend so much money for this upgrade.

For the more demanding games of today, the i5 will bottleneck a 1080 even at 4K, so upgrading would be wise. You'll also want 16GB of RAM as 8 is barely scraping by nowadays.

Ideas, price and part wise, with the AMD build being overclockable:

Hi Pixel5,

Thank you for your information :).

Budget : 1000 AUS

CPU: I was initially thinking to just upgrade my current LGA 1150 CPU to i7 but i am not sure if there new CPU launching. Most likely at this stage planning to build a new system. What kind of CPU do you suggest ? I heard Ryzen is better than 8700K

Graphic Card: I understand for a high setting in the 4K I would need to do SLI or purchase asus gtx 1080 ti. I do regret not getting a ti :(. If i do overclock on one 1080 would it be possible to match with a 1080 ti ?

Vive: I know current VR game should be ok , I am more looking at longer term. so the current 1080 could stable at a FPS at 90 ? I thought it will drop to 30 depending on the game.

System: If I don't continue with this upgrade. What's the ideal spec to optimism this Asus strix 1080 card ?

Thank you.

many thanks,

koolrabbit

Hi NelizMastr,

Thank you for the details info. :)

I agree with you. most probably build a new system.

CPU: Is that true ryzen is better than coffee lake ? For a longer term should i get i7 ? do you need a CPU cooler ( water system)?

Motherboard: is there a need to get a Asus gaming board ?

memory:  for longer term is there a need to get more than 16gb ?

case: do you recommend any good case?

thank you

An R5 2600 is likely a good value CPU if you just want to replace it. The i7 8700 6 core is like $400 AUS on the part picker

Dunno your storage needs, Your X470 motherboard pricing is broken, could maybe get an X370 board with a better VRM, but those are like $130-150

I haven't been in market for monitors for awhile already, so my knowledge is very limited.

For SSD, I recommend going for at least 250GB to fit a few modern day games. Samsung EVO 860 is a good choice, but performance wise it is barely notice able to be honest, so any brand is ok.

Upgrade for sure, your cpu is decent, up until around 1060. At 1080, your cpu is going to be bottlenecking it a ton. Other than the 1080 you already bought, what is your budget for the rest of your parts? It will help to give part ideas.

Id go with the 8086k. Very good processor. As far as cooling, the Cryorig 15 and NH D15S are almost identical, the NH D15S just has more earthy tone fans which may clash with your build, so choose whichever you prefer. Also Ive heard the corsair is quite good, but I have no experience with these personally so :/ Id go with the asus Z370, Super durable and good looking board. How much ram would you be getting? That ram is really good but get at least 8 gigs, if not 16 for future proofing. The 750w psu will will be better for future upgrades, AND if you get the liquid AIO you should get 750. (That one is a bit expensive for what it is, check out the EVGA 750 GQ, 80+ GOLD, good deal and saves electric bill. 970 EVO is very good price to performance, Its what I have so definetly recomend, and as far as size it depends on whether you want to put more than just the O.S. On it. Also probably buy a 1Tb+ hdd/ssd for more cheap space.

Hi atomburst,

Thank you for helping me out and also every one being very helpful. :):) Thank you.

Sorry for my late reply. I actually gone with a new build but i think i am over budget trying to keep it under 2500 AUS . I still havn't get power supply , ram and sdd and m2 or hard drive.  Also i want to try to do some overclocking as well ( I am very new to overclocking).

Is it better to overclock after the warranty ?

Below is my current build

CPU: i7 8700K                                                   $466.65 AUS  (brought on 15%)
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15                                  $107.10 AUS (brought on 15%)
Case Fractal Design ATX Define R6               $177.65 AUS (brought on 15%)
Motherboard: Asus strix Z370-H                   $211.65 AUS (brought on 15%)
Asus strix GTX 1080 A8G                                $735.00 AUS  (brought on 20%)

Memory: any recommend for the best ram and a budget one  for this build considering overclocking as well?

Power supply: any recommend for the best PSU and a budget one  for this build considering overclocking as well?

Storage: any recommend for the best M2, SDD , hard drive and a budget one  for this build considering overclocking as well?

Montior: any recommend for the best monitor and a budget one for this build ?

Many thanks,
