Electronics and water CAN mix...

iamdarkyoshi

So I was given a dead GTX 460. It artifacted like mad. I figured it was dead. It was covered in cigarette paste, I figured I'd give it a good cleaning with hot soapy water and agressive scrubbing with a toothbrush before throwing it on to my GPU shelf.

This is what the cooler looked like, the PCB wasn't even recognizable

After cleaning it, I dried the parts and board with my air compressor, put it back together, and figured I'd test it.

Guess it just needed all that tar cleaned out from under the chips and other components, I've had it running for an hour now. Works great.

This isn't the first card I've cleaned in the sink either. Just gotta make sure they're dry first ;)

As long as there is no electricity going through the card (it's not on and any capacitors had time to adequately discharge), it won't get fried.

However, water is still corrosive, and while drying is probably adequate, I would soak it in rubbing alcohol just to be safe.

Hm, so humans aren't the only things that can't run for an hour if you plug them up with cigarette tar :P

I wash my parts often If I'm too lazy to clean it with only air blower.

it faster, and more effective.

The smell must have been wonderful.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. Back when we had a repair shop there used to be customers that did not believe their smoking habit was the cause of the machine's failure, even after showing them stuff like that.

We ended up charging an extra "smokers fee" for having to work on bs like that.
