Are modular PSU cables reversible?

donalgodon

Are modular PSU cables that are the same on both ends reversible?

I noticed that some of them like VGA cables for example look the same on both ends, but it never occurred to me if they were directional.

Sometimes but not usually.

You could maybe force a cable into a slot the wrong way, but then the voltages on the pins would be all different so I wouldn't plug that it into anything that I don't want to cook.

Edit: just realized you meant putting the cables in the othrr way.

In that case, as long as they still fit into what you want, it'd probably be okay because cables are just copper wrapped in plastic with connectors on the ends.

I guess what I mean is for example, the VGA cables can be connected to the PSU or to the video card itself, and both ends look the same on a 4 pin connector.

As already mentioned: a wire is simply a conducting piece of metal surrounded by an insulator. The electricity hasn’t got any preferred flow direction if you’re simply looking at the cable on its own.

So, theoretically, reversing a modular PSU cable shouldn’t give any problems. However, in my case, my OCD would probably kick in knowing that the cable is in there backwards. ;-)

I just did my first complete solo build and that's exactly what I was thinking about.

So your build is finished?

With the PSU cables connected the right way? ;-)

Only On Silverstone.

Other than that: NO!

As already mentioned by Stefan, other than Silverstone, this is a *bad* idea as the cables are not 1:1...

That would only be true if the Pinout is the Same and the Connectors would have the same Pinout on both ends - wich is mostly not true.

The best Example is newer Seasonic units. They use PCIe Connectors for everythign on the PSU Side.

BUT: They use the EPS Pinout. Hell yeah...

And the ATX Connector shouldn't be connected the other way around anyway - even on Silverstone. Because of Voltage Sense Wiring.

Some PSU have the 3,3V Sense instead of the obsolete -5V on PSU Side (Cougar LX for example)...
