I have a crazy idea

So, I just had this idea that cpu manufacturers could make custom lids for their cpu's for water cooling. Instead of a traditional waterblock, the alternative lid would be the waterblock, removing the extra space between the die and the waterblock that the heat spreader creates. In theory, it should transfer heat better than the original heat spreader and cool the cpu much better. What does everyone think? I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this idea.

You can delid a CPU for direct die cooling, there is even a company specifically doing that as a replacement IHS.

cpu manufacturers would never do that

just one more kink in their armor

I'm specifically suggesting that Intel and AMD make an ihs for water cooling so you don't void the warranty if you want cool the die directly. I saw Linus' video on that ihs a while ago and didn't think about it again till now.

Wouldn't that be a chink?

Yeah, but how would one detach the original IHS and put that new one on? You can't really make a quick disconnect system for that. Also, the reason why Intel and AMD wouldn't do that lies in the fact that maybe 1% of the user base will actually take advantage of it (and there's no reasonably easy way to do that.)

I get what you guys are saying. It's impractical and there isn't a big enough demand for it. I was just brainstorming and thought I'd ask what you guys think. I don't think there's an easy way to idiot proof it or an easy way to manufacture it. Thank you all.

Why bother making a separate ihs for it when they can just sell the whole thing for more already assembled? I'd say that would sell really damn well. As long as they use a more then decent thermal paste that is....

If you made a water block the ihs, that removes an entire layer of thermal paste and the original ihs. If I were to buy a Threadripper, I'd want that thing to be water cooled. Why not build it into a heat monster like Threadripper?
