The repeal isn't set to activate until June 11th. Nothing has changed yet because nothing could change yet. The protections are still in place.

will be interesting to see with the new transparency rule between ISP & consumers anything would change , only way they can keep things rolling is if all the major companies huddle up together to form a pact on what to throttle. which they most probably wouldn't do for profits & consumer satisfaction.

That would also break antitrust laws. They'd have lawsuits similar to those faced by RAM manufacturers currently.

That is IF you are serviced by any others. Been looking for quite a while and all I can find for non big 3/4 are enterprise deliveries that don't go to my area. Looked at comwave but can't find anywhere on their site where they service.

Canada has a very large TPIA (Third Party Internet Access) ISP ecosystem. Yes, they use the "incumbent" (big three) for the last mile, but they use their own equipment for routing, etc, and set their own policies on throttling, etc.

 

Check companies like Start.ca, TekSavvy (my particular favourite), Distributel, etc. They might service your area using one of your existing incumbents (Shaw, for example).

I rather love my unlimited 250up/20down TekSavvy plan.   I ran a 1.5TB torrent last week.

Yep - I had them for years. Only switched to Rogers because they gave me unlimited Gigabit + Cable TV for $100/mo

 

Once the promo pricing is no longer appealing, I'll drop the TV and switch back to TekSavvy.

Canada's internet pricing is... okay, for a 1st world country. We fall behind most other 1st world countries in Europe and Asia, but we're in some ways better - and in other ways worse - than our American counterparts down south.

 

Pricing in the US is so inconsistent that some people are getting Gigabit for $100/mo, and others are getting 5Mbps for $100/mo.

To be fair that price I gave was from TekSavvy, one of the more competitive ISP's in Canada. Bell would be charging a lot more for DSL for that speed... if you could even get that speed. Where I live, I can get 1Gbps Cable Internet from Rogers, but the best DSL I can get from Bell is 7Mbps.

Still, only company even in the us that would come close to that is Google Fiber, and that's only in certain cities.

Here in the UK I'm paying Sky £20 a month (plus £18.99 line rental which every ISP charges) for 40/20 Unlimited Fibre but unlike most US ISPs unlimited here in England means unlimited, I regularly download hundreds of gigabytes a month in data alone plus all my YouTube, Amazon & Netflix streaming, gaming and general browsing and it's NEVER throttled.

 

I should add it's only £20 per month because I also have Sky TV, without the TV subscription it would be £30 per month.

Yes that's CAD. But there's taxes on top of it. So it's $52 + 13% = ~$59/mo. Whereas your $20 GBP includes VAT in the face value.

This is very true. Right now I pay $120 a month for 1000/50 uncapped data where I live now. Last place I lived (less than a year ago) was $135 for 150/5 uncapped. It all depends on the infrastructure in place.

 

On the topic at hand... this will never pass. They will need pass both the house and senate, then get president Trumps signature to pass. Never going to happen.

But it will never make it through the House. And Trump sure as hell isn't going to sign it.

While Comcast instituted 'official' caps of 300 GB at one point, in practice you had to burn at least a terabyte of bandwidth several months more or less in a row in order to trigger throttling.
