New PC Build - First since 2013

Acans

Hi all,

I'm starting to plan my next PC build, however I'm wondering which direction to go with the processor.

I'm thinking between either the mainstream i7-8700K or perhaps looking at something a little higher, like the 8 core or perhaps the 10 core i7-7820X / i9-7900X.

It'll be my everything PC, lots of chrome tabs, usually some form of video (YouTube/VLC), Gaming with the option to Stream to Twitch with no issues, and starting Post Production in Adobe PP. Currently using Sony Vegas but I'll be doing a Bachelor of Film and the place uses Adobe PP. I'll be planning on turning the current PC into a render slave, so being able to scrub and edit the timeline without lag is preferred over super render throughput.

I currently use 4 monitors, 3x24 inch and 1x27 inch. None are 4K but I may look into getting a 4K monitor down the track, or at least something with 10 bit colour.

I won't mind spending that bit extra if the price to performance lines up, as I want this to last me at least another 3-5 years as my current PC just past it's 5th Birthday.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback in regards to the options :).

well if your gonna use your old computer as a render slave then just get the 8700k. You wont need the extra cores (unless your really impatient about your renders/have more than one at a time) since you have another computer doing the rendering and it could also be your streaming computer for the small price of a capture card. Intel Price to performance Ratio falls off dramatically the higher you go, I think anything above the 8700K is pretty impractical (price/performance) unless you just want bragging rights or can seriously justify buying one cause your work load is that crazy.

Current: R2600X@4.0GHz\\ Corsair Air 280x \\ RTX 2070 \\ 16GB DDR3 2666 \\ 1KW EVGA Supernova\\ Asus B450 TUF

Old Systems: A6 5200 APU -- A10 7800K + HD6670 -- FX 9370 + 2X R9 290 -- G3258 + R9 280 -- 4690K + RX480

If you're patient enough I'd strongly suggest waiting until September when Intel is releasing the Z390 Chipset motherboards for the  i7 8790k 8c/16t Coffee Lake CPU this way you'll have HEDT power of an i9 on the mainstream platform.

My brother actually is not all that happy with the i9 7900x due to its lower single thread performance and Mesh being so inferior to Ring and is strongly considering changing it since he has no use for the extra PCI-e Lanes and 64gb of RAM is enough.

For those asking about budget, 3k-5k. Since living in Australia I get to claim it on Tax. Not the whole amount upfront, but large % of it over 3 years.

If price to performance is really bad past the 8700K, than I'll probably sit for that. Worst case scenario if I need to upgrade at a later date, I can turn the 8700K build to the render/streaming slave, and than the current PC into my server. My current server is a 2nd gen i7 that holds all my large 4TB HDD's and any applications/vm's that I like running 24/7. It's almost 7 years old so god knows how much longer I have it for.

Falls just under my 5K mark when converted to AUD, but I wanna give Threadripper a pass for the moment.

Also you read my mind about what case/psu maker I was after. Trying to figure out if I want Trident RGB or Vengeance RGB, since I've already got many Corsair RGB peripherals.

i wan't for that cuz i  personally also lovecorsair, and that is an amazing case looks wise.

I'm not going to discount the performance argument in the mainstream platforms for amd vs intel, very close right now, but in the extreme space, price/performance is AMD all the way. Threadripper has a much better value than i9's

I like it but the mobo can be done cheaper

That'll save $30 for you, but i like the rest, even if it is overkill, it's very proportional, no obvious bottlenecks

I would definitely use the old computer like this to split up the workload. Lessening the workload will also help prolong the life of the new PC

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

If the old system will be used to offload rendering and other tasks, then an i7-8700K or R7 2700X strike me as optimal choices.

The Crystal 570X RGB case has clear side panels. I think this makes for a difficult build as there is nowhere to really hide.
