As someone who owned a gtx 280.

I say this: hell no. Don't buy it. Thing was a furnace and the 5770 was alot better.

What's your CPU?

Ive used a GTX280. I have a 5770 that came with my Phenom II x4 955 build in Crossfire (sold the second card). 5770 performed much better, but not by a whole lot. Replaced it with an RX460. Best decision I ever made.

I'd suggest looking for a GTX750 if you can spare the cash. Pretty cheap so I've seen here in the states. If your CPU is half decent you'll see a huge performance increase.

The gtx280 afaik doesn't support dx11. I would stick with the 5770 or get something newer if you have the budget.

The GTX280 can't do DX11 nor can it run 3 Monitors.

The first nVidia Cards that could do that were Kepler...

Are you sure? Userbenchmark is reliable enough for an average comparison.

Some people believe that, for whatever reason, even when the technical specifications don't really support that claim...

And it, as always, depends on the Software used for the Test...

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/250/radeon-hd-5770

And even if, the 5770 consumes around 130W less power than the 280 according to the TDP Rating and is only a DX10 card...

There is no reason to use the GTX 280 if you have the 5770, the Power consumption is enough reason for that.

Especially since people always tell how important that might be ;)

You'd still want a better GPU, depending what you're doing with Linux. As it's been said though, the 5770 beats out the GTX280
