Is it possible that nvidia will release a driver update that will enable existing (preferably the 10xx series) nvidia gpus to use freesync?

Title says it all, wondering if it is possible as i am planning to buy a freesync monitor because it is way cheaper than a g-sync monitor.

over their dead body. Nvidia refuses to use any of AMD's open standards, they prefer to push their crappy solutions, like gsync and gameworks. You can use Vsync though. Or get a freesync monitor anyway. Here where I live, I could only find a 1080p144hz gsync monitor, so had to get that, on an AMD card.... :S

 

it works. You just don't get to use gsync.

Yeah they could easily but they would never because no one would buy a g-sync panel that costs $100-$200 more then the free sync counter part

edit: consider a freesync monitor on an nvidia card just a regular monitor.  I have that setup and it works fine, it's just not adaptive.  freesync requires no additional hardware and is free or a minimal cost to panel makers

Hardware plus licensing fees.  I definitely felt the price when I bought my GSync monitor.

I don't think there's anything that's limiting NVIDIA from allowing their cards to support FreeSync. Mobile G-Sync is driven by Adaptive Sync. So they can definitely do it.

AFAIK, it is perfectly possible, At this point, that would be against their business strategy, so is it expected? Certainly not. However, if the landscape changes enough so that they find it in their best interest, they should be able to do it. I cannot think of many such steers in Nvidia's past (think CUDA vs OpenCL, for example).

in the future, yeah easily, but I'm sure there is at least some consideration that has to be paid to the hardware or base level firmware (whatever it's called, idk) for a pascal card to support FreeSync. If not, then every monitor would have freesync capability and AMD would have released something to get freesync on their older gpus

Nvidia can definitely do it and are even having a closed beta for testing the new drivers to enable it on Nvidia cards. You need to have an approved FreeSync monitor on the list in order to be eligible to participate.

Not really, there is no "freesync board". You need support for the right kind of connection that the software can use at each point, plus there is a certification in order to slap the "Freesync" label on a product. So you need monitors and GPUs that are "Freesync compatible", but I think what @Psittac meant is that there is no Freesync-exclusive hardware inside those products that is required for Freesync. Hardware with the appropriate adaptive sync capability could be rendered Freesync compatible via firmware.

Technically possible but won't happen in the near future. Intel on the other hand will..

 

Nvidia graphics cards on freesync may happen first on Linux. With open source graphics drivers somebody will reverse engineer the upcoming freesync AMD driver and create a community implementation of freesync on Nvidia which may be merged to the open source Nvidia driver. This will not be earth shattering because on Linux Nvidia does not officially support the open source drivers for their GPUs and as a result they suck and are typically only used for initial setup until installing the official driver. Still it would be a proof of concept that Nvidia GPUs can work fine with freesync.

That is correct, you still need a proper hardware to enable Freesync on supported AMD cards. It's not simply software enabled to achieve result on any monitors.

in the future, yeah easily, but I'm sure there is at least some consideration that has to be paid to the hardware or base level firmware (whatever it's called, idk) for a pascal card to support FreeSync. If not, then every monitor would have freesync capability and AMD would have released something to get freesync on their older gpus

FreeSync is driven by Adaptive Sync which is found in DisplayPort 1.2a. So a card would have to support that rev to support FreeSync.
