Will You Buy the New Atari VCS?

I know the general feelings aren't terribly positive for the new Atari VCS. I am still actually going to buy one, regardless of its power or other issues. Even so much for it as much as a "Flashback" machine, I am really curious as to what indie games will come to it.

 

I am also curious as to if anyone is going to take a chance on buying one when it's finally released to the public. So is anyone here going to take the plunge?

If it can run netflix and act like a Roku or AppleTV I might consider it just for the looks but $250 is a bit steep

Yeah, I think it needs more than just the gaming aspect to justify the price. But at the same time, every home theater set up has some form of streaming access. Even cheaper TVs are featuring these features.

 

Atari would need to market the heck out of it and to the right people to make this whole thing work. Somehow, I don't see it happening.

I already have a BluRay player, Switch, Steam Link and Chromecast hooked upto my TV so it's not like I can't already play most media and most games. So it'd have to do something else to win me over. For that price I highly doubt it will, I'd get far more out of an XBOne S or PS4 at that price. Hell I could sell my graphics card and get something better even with GPU prices as they are and get more from the money. Buy an entry level soundbar even.

 

It really doesn't make any sense at all at the price.

No. I see no point in the console.

  • Does not bring anything new to the table. It is just a cheap Steam box minus Steam (which I am sure you can install).
  • Crappy controller that will be like any third party cheapo game console controllers, or worst like the OUYA.
  • Lots of hype, lots of promises, goes with nostalgia to hype things up and boost sales, and no demo and delays, ... says that it will flop to me, from experience.
  • Console is not from Atari, but Infogrames who bought the name only, but makes you think it is the original Atari guys behind it isn't.
  • Going "It runs this open OS, so it will great!" sales pitch is not a sales pitch. It is OUYA all over again. Assuming it even sales, you'll have the greenlight Steam games flood the gates of this box. 200 identical asset flips per day.

 

A game console needs to bring something new and unique to the market. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft does this at every generation. This console brings none. Might as well release another mediocre Android phone, with the most bland design ever to blend with the rest.
