Why aren't cases built to have power supplies installed sideways?

Doing this would bring the following benefits:

* Reduced desk footprint.  Builds will be taller, but less wide. 

* The PSU would blow directly into the air from the side of the case, resulting in immediately lower case temps and more case ventilation without even needing to design a vent.

* The PSU won't be be blowing hot air into a GPU that is trying to blow out hot air

* The PSU (if installed upside down) won't be blowing hot air into a small floor crevice.

PC Build: R5-1600.  Scythe Mugen 5.  GTX 1060.  120 GB SSD.  1 TB HDD.  FDD Mini C.  8 GB RAM (3000 MHz).  Be Quiet Pure Wings 2.  Capstone-550.  Deepcool 350 RGB.

Peripherals: Qisan Magicforce (80%) w/ Gateron Blues.  Razer Naga Chroma.  Lenovo 24" 1440p IPS.  PS4 Controller.

Audio: Focusrite (Solo, 2nd), SM57, Triton Fethead, AKG c214, Sennheiser HD598's, ATH-M50x, AKG K240, Novation Launchkey

Wishlist: MP S-87, iPad, Yamaha HS5's, more storage

it works already, don't fix it !

Because some graphics cards are really wide and cases can't be smaller for that reason, no matter which way the PSU is mounted.

 

I'm not sure about this one but don't PSUs exhaust out the back anyways, so that shouldn't affect the graphics card.

My case has the PSU or PSUs mounted sideways. Yeah has room for two

But it doesn't work.  Builders are spending more money on cooling to reduce case temps while increasing case temps by leaving the power supply inside of it.  Why not just use the fan that already comes with the PSU as an exhaust fan?

I'm not sure about this one but don't PSUs exhaust out the back anyways, so that shouldn't affect the graphics card. 

Yes, some video cards are wider than a power supply on its side.  However, no graphics card is as wide as a power supply upright.

 

Even if a power supply sideways is too thin, a case could just put a hard drive cage next to it and narrow the length of the case.

it is an exhaust fan

they're buying more fans for more airflow in and out, the PSU already is an exhaust and also PSU doesn't make much heat. Mine doesn't even turn on unless I have extended periods of GPU + CPU load, GPU only or CPU only doesn't turn on the fan inside my PSU

Builds with enough space for a decently sized CPU or GPU cooler won't get narrower because of a PSU mounted sideways. The PSU doesn't even take up the entire width in a lot of cases. 

PSUs intake with the fan, and exhaust it through the back of the PSU, where the AC plug is. Not the other way around. 

Because the fan is vertically oriented, sleeve bearing fans will last for a shorter time. 

There aren't really any benefits, except if you for some reason want to use the space behind the PSU, if the case has a special form factor, or if you want to mount two PSUs for some reason.

Fans on PSUs are usually intake fans, not exhausts.  They pull air into the PSU and blow it out the back mesh.

Simple design logic. My 540s are sideways. Doesn’t really make the footprint smaller because of that.

Traditional layouts however offer no benefit because 

A: "Height" of aftermarket GPU's

B: Hard drives (traditionally mounted)

C: Radiators (specifically 140mm)
