New GPU or 1440p?

SlaughterSmurf

So I have about $850 to spend and right now I have a 7970 ghz edition. Should  I upgrade my 7970 to something like a 780ti (or maybe wait for an 880?) or should I get a 1440p moniter? How well would a 7970 do in 1440p?

Edit: I would really rather not get a Korean panel as I have had bad experiences from Ebay retailers (no not random people) but which would be a better choice? 1440p moniter now and ugrade GPU later, or new GPU now and better moniter later?

why not both? get a korean panel and a new graphics card to go crossfire, just going to say that your new monitor potentially could have dead pixels so

Wait for an 880 and buy an Asus PB278Q monitor to enjoy 2k gaming. You will not regret it.

only off of ebay, I'd personally recommend you get a pixel perfect version where you can return it if it has dead pixels

I am not a huge fan of Ebay, I have had several bad experiences from retailers based on ebay.

I rarely get completely working tech the first time off of Newegg and NCIX, like 30% of the stuff I buy I have to return so I am not buying a Korean panel that is a lesser build quality than the broken crap I am getting.

7970 GHz Ed + Dell 1440p user here!

Its performs really well. But i say grab both. Wait for GPUs to drop back down in price but for now get a monitor.

I suggest the U2713HM. it should RU you ~$585 and that should leave you around enough money to grab another card when prices level out

Kyle from Newegg/AwesomeSauceNews bought a Korean monitor from Newegg, it was the Qnix I believe, but they also have the shimian ;D

I would grab the Qnix, and another 7970/280x, or wait for Maxwell

What settings do you have to run in order to get 60fps?

60FPS isnt my goal. Higher graphics settings at a playable framerate is.

On BF4 i see anywhere from 37-60 (max) FPS with everything maxed out.

Crysis and Metro are the only 2 games that i had to go out of my way to lower FXAA and some details to get playable framerates.

One thing i can say is this, avoid Korean eBay sellers. plenty of people have been fine with their purchases but backlight bleeding and color inaccuracy IS a problem. Along with the complete lack of warranty. Youre basically boned if yours is a dud. I suggest you stick with a reputible manufacturer.

Here's one from Monoprice

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=10509&format=2

I know local retailers such as Microcenter also carry Rebranded korean monitors.if you wanna get one for cheap then thats the route you should go. Otherwise i say get the Dell U2713HM. It has a beautiful color preset and it has a 3yr no-questions-asked warranty. You also get free 2day crossshipping. In other words lets say you get your new monitor. It has terrible blacklight bleed (VERY COMMON) and crosshatching. You call up Dell. Give em the skinny on whats going on. They ask for your address. 2 business days later a NEW monitor is on your front porch. You open it up. Its perfect. You then package up the old one in the new one's box and attach the prepaid postage stamp provided by Dell and send it back. No pennies lost and never a moment went by without a monitor.

hope i was able to help :) your 7970 will run almost all games at max settings with a playable framerate.

You will not be happy trying to run 1440p on a single 7970ghz. Your frame rates will be horrible unless you plan on turning down your settings. Of course the whole point of 1440p is better looks so why would you want to turn down your settings. You would be looking at single digit frame rates to low teens on games like Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light with Very High and Ultra settings.
