hp proliant ml310e g8 sff server

Hello.

 

I got hp proliant ml310e g8 sff server. 4 drives are detected and the 5. is not. When powerup it shows that the disk gets power. I changed HARD DRIVE BACKPLANE. Still got same error. Should i change the raid/sas controller itself?

Not detected where? On the RAID card? In the operating system? Is the 5th drive part of the array? What's your RAID configuration?

 

Also, does your backplane have multiple mini SAS (SFF-8087) ports connected to the RAID card? One cable supports 4 drives, so you need 2 for 5 or more drives.

most backplanes have port multipliers built in.

Most HP servers I've dealt with (Gen 6 through gen 9) have one cable per " box"  of 4 drives, though.

why HP cheeped out on that I don't know. it doesn't look like their is one.

When i start the server, the 5th disk gets power but the green ring do not stay green. Othe 4 remain green but the 5th not. Before booting Windows the post says that the 5th drive is faulty and it shoud be changed. If i change the 5th disck with 4th the number 4 disk do not work also in the 5th disk cage. It apears the disk itself is good but the server do not recognise the 5th and the last 3 disk (dummys are there) 

 

I got two cables from the raid controller coming.  I think my raid config is raid 5.

Did you add all 5 drives to the array? Isn't the 5th drive a hot spare or simply unconfigured? Make sure to check that in the RAID card's configuration menu during bootup.

Now... 

I got two warings 

772 Smart Array P420 in Slot 4 Has one or more cache module batteries/capacitors that are recharging. Caching operations such as Expansion, Extension and Migration are temporarily suspended until the batteries/cappasitors are fully charged. Caching operations will automaticly resume when charging is complete.

 

825 The chache for smart array P420 in slot 4 has been disabled because the cahce module encountered a hardware failure. 

 

I can see all 5 drives. 4 are data and 5th is spare drive

On chache settings i see cache disabled; flash memory/power source hardware failure

Cache battery module needs changing they’re quite cheap. But that’s unrelated to your 5th drive problem

There ya go. Spare drives don't actually turn on. They're kept offline until they're required to replace a failed drive. This is normal.
