I am wondering if anyone knows about a pump that is strong enough for a custom liquid mercury Hardline Loop?  I want to do liquid mercury since it has a very low specific heat and thus can probably be used to more effectively cool a PC.  Not to mention it will look pretty damn good I think...

Cool idea... But also dumb idea.

I dont think any rad is gonna like being filled with mercury.

I know I can't use aluminum, but I could use copper, if it was sprayed with anti-corrosion and if nothing else I could use iron since it is non reactive with liquid mercury.

It's a pretty interesting (and kind of stupid) idea, although copper and aluminum parts won't last very long with Mercury inside it.

Glass would not have any reaction with Mercury. That said, unless you want to die or have life long disabilities, I really do not recommend using mercury as coolant, since mercury vapor when mercury is heated would be extremely poisonous.

You would need to use a metal that isn't reactive with mercury. Aluminum is out of the question because mercury will utterly destroy it. I'm not sure about copper, but considering it's used in amalgamations of mercury, it's probably not good either.

 

The other problem is mercury is heavy. You'll need a more powerful pump to keep it moving than if you used water.

 

I was going to suggest Gallium, since it's also a liquid metal at relatively low temperatures and isn't as toxic (if it is), but it has the same corrosive properties as mercury.

Unless the house is warmed above ~85F, pure Gallium will remain a solid. I don't think there's a pump that would much appreciate trying to push a solid material around. The loop would require to be heated before the pump can be turned on.

It's been done before with a gallium mixture, it's just not cost effective for the marginal gain from cooling.

Super bad idea (for the health reasons alone). But Ultimately any kind of conventional "liquid" cooling setup relies on the transmission of heat from a radiator to air (atmosphere), that is the limiting factor, not the transmission of block to water for example.
