and no, they arent.  they are using fear mongering to prevent further competition in the US market.

they are basing everything solely off the fact that its a chinese company. but make no mention of the fact that Lenovo is also a chinese company that they dont have any issues with.   its literally just to prevent competition and they have yet to provide any actual fact to back up their bullshit

We don't know if its fear mongering in this case yet. It wasn't when Lenovo was already caught with putting spyware into their pc's.

I knew this news wasn't anything new,but didn't know it went back to 2012. However these Chinese phones don't have much regulation to make sure there isn't anything that could cause a security issue,doesn't matter much outside of government use but it wouldn't be surprising if the Chinese were spying on phones though. IMO if agencies think its such a issue they should contract with a North American company for government use with customized iOS or something. I think Huawei phones are fine,better than some of the more well known brands of phones and if anyone is that worried about their phone they should re-install if their carrier allows with a stock version of Android.

it actually goes back even further, like 2004

 

its a multinational company, just like any other.  also, 90% of other phone manufacturers have all their phones made in china anyways, the risk of infiltration is identical.    they act as if huawei is state owned, but its not..its employee owned(at least it was back in 2012). 

dont get me wrong, i dont use their phones and if they did come to the US, i probably still wouldnt.  but more competition is always a good thing. and to halt competition solely due to baseless accusations and fears, is stupid.

 

if i recall, most of the fear actually comes from the fact that the CEO spent time in the chinese military as communications guy. he served in the chinese equivalent of the Army Corps of Engineers(which i myself served in)

I would still use Huawei above any american brand, because american hardware DEFINITELY doesn't have ANY NSA spyware on them. Nooo, not at all. Never. US, spying, impossible.

Competition isn't the only reason that the US doesn't want their products in the country. It's the fact that they're backed by the state (China), and as a result, the state has more say in the operations of the company. This is also where it differs from companies like Lenovo, as you mentioned them previously.

 

They're also not the only country to have their doubts about them. Canada has refused the use of Hauwei hardware for any back end solutions.

Cisco doesn't make phones

Using one above the other makes no sense at all. I'll avoid Huawei until they are more open about the hardware in their phones.

Huawei makes server hardware though.... so yes you can compare Cisco to Huawei.

because they already banned server hardware from huawei in 2012......... as well as all kinds of net material. So routers, 4G anthennas, wifi sticks, etc etc....... did you even go check the other thread? I detailed it there. US has been hating on Huawei since a VERY long time.

there's your argument. NSA spied Huawei during years, and may have even stolen some of Huawei's tech. Officially, they weren't going to give it to american companies, but you never know, netgear and cisco are already trembling in front of huawei's superiority in networking. I don't see what kind of other arguments you need?

in these kind of situations there isn't proof, just suspicions. It's up to you to trust or not a brand, and if your family prefers to believe a government that has been caught lying multiple times about spying rather than a chinese tech company that has been in trouble with the US for years, then nothing can be done.

 

The only real info available is that one, NSA spied and probably stole Huawei tech and never managed to prove Huawei was actually spying. Otherwise, a few governments in Europe would rather use Huawei networking equipment than ever considering american one, which is pretty telling on who they trust the most

 

You can always get a Honor or Huawei device (or even Xiaomi, there are other good chinese brands out there) in the future, when you aren't dependant of your family. With the current way things are going with protectionism, I don't think this will have an end.

So I didn't actually get rid of the phone. It turns out the Samsung was faulty and I had to return it. The phone was still semi-functional (just couldn't call) and got sometime to use it / get to know it, and i don't like it much. I ended up returning it and kept my huawei. Things didn't calm down and are getting worse, are there any other good replacements with similar features, and not a fortune?
