I was reading this article: http://www.pcgamer.com/singleplayer-games-arent-dead-theyre-just-changing/ and thinking with all the recent trends will we see single player games in the future?

I guess more software developers change their focus to online gaming as they get more money. There are and will be coming out AAA single player games but it seems the major focus went away especially in creating a new IP.

Even in the money-crazed AAA business, singleplayer games are not dead. Skyrim did well enough they decided to make an MMO (which did not do very well). Fallout 4 did fine too.

Maybe there's a bigger market for lootbox microtransaction money pits with small amounts of game mixed in, but the market for singleplayer games is not going away. That also means some developers will keep making those games, even if EA goes off in another direction.

Most probably

I think they will not die. I love witcher 3 and metro.

Btw metro exodus will be released early 2018!

Yes because "single games" only it sounds like the future is selling bundles of multiple games xD

Regardless, of course they aren't dead, hells CS:GO aside I ONLY play Story Driven games by today, and yes like you said Metro and The Witcher are 2 perfect examples of perfectly enjoyable story driven games that deserves $$$ far better than those temporary massive multiplayer games that fades in question of months like BF1 (which had by far the WORSE campaign ever).

Single-player games ain't dead, not by a long shot. Story-mode coop-gaming, on the other hand, pretty much is and it's really, really, really saddening me. :(

That is true, the games that allow for 2 players at the same time using 2 controllers rather than online is something of the past... I loved played The Legend of Spyro Dawn of the Dragon in coop with my boyfriend, I played Cynder and he Spyro ^^

Well, I was talking of the PC-games, not console-ones, but yeah. On the PC-side story-mode coop availability has always been worse than on consoles and it's even worse now -- not that consoles are doing well, either :( I don't understand why, it's just so much fun to be able to share a story with someone you enjoy playing with. Just playing through a story like that can make even a mediocre story feel better.

Meh. I like games with proper stories and I've never been much of a fan of competitive gaming, so I'm gonna hang on to the hopes that someday companies will see the light again..

sony invests more on SP story driven games, i read somewhere some guy from Sony saying they want to continue with it. They and Bethesda seem the ones more focused on it, including new IP's.

GTA or Skyrim really seem victims of online, the companies seem more interested in exploring the online than coming up with new games.

The problem with story driven games and co-op is you have to find a way to work around having a variable amount of characters in your story. Meaning any PC you play is equally important or equally worthless to the grand scheme of things.

And then there's the problem of some stories making no sense with multiple PCs. If Skyrim for instance were co-op, then you're going to have to fight for who's Dragonborn because lore wise, it doesn't make sense for every PC to be one. (or they could just hand wave it)

Single player, story driven games are a favorite among gamers but the corporations pushing for games as a service to be the future are forcing their own agenda and fulfilling their own prophecy, shut down/de-fund single player games while pouring money/resources into micro-transaction infested online crap because it has a great ROI ratio then point at the stats and say see this is where the future is! lol
