Buy GTX 970?

Oberon.Smite
Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

If you play at 1080p the GTX970 is still plenty viable for 60-100fps depending on the title. (Within reason, Wildlands kills all GPU's so you lower settings, but most games run very well, some games get more FPS than that still at Ultra, some new games may dip below 60fps #Ultra, but Handle High,VHigh much better) The GTX980 is a beast with better Vram all round, but the GTX970 is no slouch.

Most 970's can overclock well, 1400-1550Mhz on the Core (if attainable) brings HUGE legit improvements to your games.
I'd still be using my G1 Gaming 1500Mhz GTX970 today for my 1080p panel, but since I now have a 2560x1080p panel and using the GTX970 gave me an appreciation for NvidiaDSR(enhanced resolutions if GPU power allows) so now I have a GTX1070, but I wouldn't hesitate once for going back to a GTX970 because I know it will still be viable for so many uses in so many games.

So I sold my R9 280 and was going to buy an RX 580 8GB. The price range for that card is around 270-320 so it's above MSRP by quite a bit. I saw a refurbished GTX 970 for 170 at microcenter and I think I might just buy that as a temporary card until Vega is affordable again. Good move or should I wait it out with my 550 Ti?

Skip Vega unless you need it for some purpose. The 580 is quite a bit better than the 970 and should be a good choice.

Its a pretty capable card for 1080p gaming. If new stuff wasn't likely coming early next year I'd say go for it, but there's always the waiting game to be played...and even then the 580 is pretty sweet too if it is on sale.

And thank for shopping at Microcenter ;)

The 580 is better but it's not $100-$150 better

The thing is tho it's only 10-15% better at 1080p, and I'm not sure that's worth it for the extra money. The cheapest 580 is 270, with the average being closer to 300.
