Help Me Pick A Graphics Card

TurbulentWinds
Go to solution Solved by Tz000,

I have a ryzen 5 1600 oc'd @ 3.9Ghz w/ Asus RX 580 8GB this is all paired to a asus mg248q 144hz display.

In terms of gaming performance heres a bit of a list w/ fps numbers / settings EDIT: ALL @ 1080P

CSGO - 300+ FPS - Custom settings med/low

PUBG -  70-95 FPS - Custom settings low/ultra

FORZA HORIZON - 90+ FPS - Custom Settings mostly set to high.

BF1 - 90+ FPS - High settings

COD WW2 - 85+ FPS - High settings

If settings are really knocked down these numbers easily go over 100 FPS but with freesync and on most games 75+ fps its a great experience.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Currently, I’m rocking a i5-7600k on water, 16 GB DDR4, and a 750 Ti (had a 1050 Ti then it broke). I’m looking to get into 1080p 144hz gaming  and don’t mind running games at the lowest settings. I mostly play lighter indie and AA titles with a couple more demanding games thrown in the mix. Again, I’m not expecting to have the games look pretty, I just would like to enjoy the smooth experience of high refresh rate gaming. I’m thinking that a 1060 3GB might be able to push the frames I need, but the 1070 seems like a more sure and much more powerful option. Lowest price possible while hitting frame rate targets is the extent of my budget.

The 1060 3GB is a pretty powerful card but keep in mind that running out of VRAM might be an issue in the future if you don't lower the settings a lot. The 1070 is a bit overkill IMO for 1080p, unless you really wanna crank up the settings. If the price difference between a 1060 6GB and a 1070 isn't that big, get a 1070 as it will do better in the future. But if not, go for the 6GB 1060

Go with a 1060 6gb if you want the lowest price. That will play a lot of games at 1080p 144fps at high settings. But a 1070 will almost guarantee you 1080p 144fps at ultra settings in 99% of games.

I thought that the 1060 6GB was unable to fully use its VRAM.

I use a 3GB in my own PC. Trust me, even today some games run out of VRAM if you really crank up the settings. And the way it's going, looks like that is going to happen more often in the future

I mean not in terms of the amount of VRAM the game needs but in terms of the actual GPU being able to utilize it. Anyway, the 6GB is like $270 where I am and the 3GB is like $220, I just don’t feel that the slight performance bump is worth that big a price increase.

If a  1060 3gb runs out of vram for  a high ultra setting, the 1060 6gb wont run out of vram vut will run out of power the card is not  strong enough  for games that req a massive amount of vram  . Whih os why the performamce from a 6gb to 3gb  is roughly 10% which in reality is ~ 5 fps, if thetrs less than 40$difference between the 2 1060s get the bigger one otherwise either break the ban and go  1070 or  enjoy the 3gb version  its a great 1080p card

neither the 1060 3gb or 6gb would be enough for 1080p 144hz, you'll need a 1070 and up.

I’ve seen the whole 1070 and up thing from basically every video and article I have read, but however, they are all pushing 144 FPS at max settings in highly demanding games, whereas I will be playing on the lowest settings and no AA on indie to AA games, not AAA. Do you still think that on lowest settings 144 FPS is achievable with a lower end card? Also, how about the RX580?

if you lower the settings then yes you'll be able to do 144hz, rx580 will do fine also.
