I was just using PPP as a guide for what I generally wanted, not the prices. Plus, I mostly wanna go for brick and mortar stores for the parts, plus get Norton at Staples

Brick and Mortar stores are MUCH more expensive 99% of the time, just order online.

 

You don't need Norton, free ones such as Avast and Avira are just as good.

Yeah, but I don't trust free ones, plus, if the store offers Ad-Match Guarantee, then I just show them the cheapest price I can find, and I get it for that price. Even then, my other alternative was to buy an off-the-shelf rig for 2-3 hundred, then upgrade the parts I need to with the rest

Maybe not Avast lol, but Avira is really effective, if you have any common sense at all

 

like don't download sketchy things and you will be fine, even Norton can't stop everything. Also once a month with any antivirus, I recommend using Malware Bytes (anti-malware)

It's not up to me what AV goes on it, but my roommate's, who has some experience with computers. He may even help me build it caus this will be my first build EVER

you'll get a much more limited selection with just a local shop, and they're likely gonna cost more. getting Norton and windows at full cost will run into your budget even more, use free antiviruses instead and get windows from reddit/kinguin or just run it deactivated for now.

Like I said, the AV isn't up to me, but I'm also thinking of possibly going for 8.1, or even 7, if those are better choices for the budget, then I might be able to get a better GPU

Those anti virus are more like malware, will use system resources and not protect you at all, the only 2 paid antivirus that makes sense getting nowadays (aside obvious good practices) is Kaspersky and ESET Nod32

You'd be better off with some free solutions than those...

 

TBH, AV shouldn't be something you really need anyways. Install a decent ad blocker like ublock origin and don't go on shady sites and you should be fine. In all my years of using pcs I've only ever gotten one piece of malware and that was because stupid me was trying to get free gems in clash of clans.
