1080 Ti Or Vega 64 (But it's complicated)

Hello Everyone. I made this thread because I was interested in people's opinions about 1080 ti's versus vega 64's. Obviously the first is more powerful, but as I said it's complicated.

I own, at least I will soon, a freesync 3440x1440 100hz monitor (The new massdrop vast). It's exclusively sold in freesync models, since g-sync is incompatible and over-expensive, but I don't really mind. I've never experienced any sort of adaptive frame technology so I don't know what I'm missing. I'm just curious- Should I buy a 1080 ti for guaranteed framerates and high settings, or buy a vega 64 for freesync but lose out to lower frames? I feel like the 1080ti is the best choice, my current card (RX 480) couldn't possibly run this monitor and I do need an upgrade, so I just wanted to hear some other people's thoughts.

Also, I'm a pretty heavy gamer, at least in time investment, so holding out even 6 months for a new card release would absolutely suck for me. I've only even had a PC for 2 years. I'm buying something this generation.

The 1080Ti card is simply better, and once you get up into the higher sized monitors GSync and FreeSync are about the same price. Don't get the Vast monitor, it isn't that great. For a little extra Acer makes a much better monitor.

How about spend more for a G-Sync 3440x1440 and then get a GTX 1080 which is better than the Vega 64? I regret buying freesync because AMD sucks with GPU's, I had a 290 die and had to purchase a 1070 about 4 months after I bought my Freesync monitor, now I've gotta wait until I can get a 144hz/3440x1440/G-Sync myself now :(

Well the point of variable refresh rate is to make the game smoother when you're getting low fps...

So it's still better to get higher fps and not need adaptive refresh rate.

When your fps is above the monitor refresh rate, gsync/freesync does literally nothing.

Get the 1080ti.

Exactly the answer I needed. I already bought the vast and I'm not returning it, I just wanted someone to justify my choice of a 1080ti or counter argue for the vega 64. Thanks.

Get Vega 56 near $399 and flash it, performs the same as 64

Or since you already have a GPU wait for Vega cards with better heatsinks

Just depends if you think the jump to a 1080ti is worth the extra $300 on MSRP

i wouldnt buy a monitor without adaptive sync tech after using it but the vast was a great price, i bought one for my office, but at the same time i would rather get higher guaranteed performance at lower power and thermals than lower performance for the sake of freesync which doesnt even have that good of a freesync range so youll still get tearing on anything that you arent getting real high fps on

1080ti any day for the extra 30-35%over Vega 64

If you're going freesync get a Vega 64 LC.  It's getting pretty close to the 1080ti in a lot of games that are being released now and costs the same.

You might be waiting a while.  There are no 144hz 3440x1440 monitors yet and even so a 1070 won't hit 144fps at that resolution unless you dial back settings.  I'm running a 1080ti and 3440x1440 and generally get 90-110fps on highest settings.

I don't mind dialing back the settings and I'm more than happy to upgrade my PC in the near future, I like the look of the 35" Asus with HDR and 200hz although it'll probably be £2000, not sure if I'm willing to pay that. 2560x1440 is more than enough for my current setup.

if 16;9 is enough you may want to check out the asus PG279Q or the acer xb271hu, both are 1440p Gsync ips panels that hit 144hz

Sounds like you should just get Flashed Vega 56 in that case to make use of free-sync.

Gotta sell my card and find a AIB V56, not thanks! My 1070 is worth less than the 56 not sidegrading and using more electric.

Thought you were the OP.

You should just live with what you have until Navi comes along, if it's decent upgrade your GPU and keep your display

Wait for next gen if you have Maxwell but if not then both are valid options tough I would not grab the 64 since 56 is the better value! ^_^

ive asked this question before and got pretty much the same answers: half of people say 1080 ti easy and the other half is for the vega and then a few still suggesting getting a different monitor all together. im in the same boat her and i think a lot of people are where we have these beautiful monitor but nothing to take full advantage of them.

me personally im not gaming that much and hardcore so i think im gonna wait for the next gen of nvidia or amd and then see they can come up with something to actually drive these things.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"
