Posted November 1, 2017 Okay, so I just started mining Etherum, mostly for fun but I find the world interesting. So Im in the Cryptocurrency forum on facebook, while browsing through the forum i came across this link. https://interestingengineering.com/samsung-builds-bitcoin-mining-rig-using-40-old-galaxy-s5s I tried to find some more in depth article about it, but the only thing that i found was this,I was hoping to find an article with some specs, hashrate etc.. But since its samsung I doubt that gonna happen any time soon. https://news.bitcoin.com/samsung-builds-bitcoin-mining-rig-using-old-phones/ I really think this is a great thing that Samsung did, the cost of a bitcoin miner is really expesnvie where i live(Norway), but everyone here has like 1-3 old cellphones laying around collecting dust. So this can finally mminimize Ewaste, and make Bitcoin mining more accesible for the everyday guy. Cryptocurrency has come to saty i believe, and it has until now been somewaht limited to specfic group of people. If i go around in oslo asking people waht bitcoin is, Im sure 7 out of 10 wont know what t is. Only thing is that I hope this is something that every cellphone manufacuterer will implement. Posted November 1, 2017 What do you mean you were hoping to find hash rates etc.? There is a picture of the table in the original article you linked. Also, a couple old phones are not going to be able to mine bitcoin reasonably and on top of that distributed computing (getting all those phones to work together) is very complicated and difficult to implement right now for someone that has a couple old phones lying around. Posted November 2, 2017 This is "neat", but an utter and complete waste of time. Mining Bitcoins on a phone, or 40 phones, is still a waste of time. Hell, the comparison that Samsung did, against an i7-2600 (a CPU from 2011, nearly 6 years old now), is utterly hilarious. Sure it beats a 6 year old CPU at mining Bitcoin. But no one mines bitcoins using CPU anymore. Hell no one mines bitcoins using GPU's anymore either. ASIC or nothing at this point. The difficulty has long since surpassed a CPU or GPU from making any reasonable amount of sense. Now if we're talking alt-coins that can still be GPU mined? MAYYYYBE. But even then, an old GPU from years ago will still smoke a CPU really badly. Simply put, there's no scenario where using 40 S5 phones to mine any coin makes any sense.
