Making Linux Mint faster

I have Linux mint 18.2 Sonya 64 bit installed on my Compaq Presaeio SR5710Y (Athlon 64X2, 2GB DDR2, 500GB HDD, GeForce 6150Se) and it works, but is slow. I used to have it installed on a really old, failing, worn out drive that had over 6 years of continuous power on time, and I figured that was why it was slow. I installed it again the other night on a newer 500GB WD Greenpower drive, and it’s not much different. Anyone have any suggestions for how to speed it up?

uninstall mint and install fedora instead :^)

That's funny  because I run 64bit mint on acer c720 chrome book and it only has 2g of ram. It's far from slow. 

 

I think you'll find the problem is the cpu doubled with the slow green drive.

The green drive actually made it faster (shows you how worn out the old drive was). I think I'll be fine with the speed of it. After all, all it does it run Remmina, Spotify and Audacity. I don't do much web browsing on it.

in which case you could just find a lighter desktop environment as that's what's making it feel slow.

That 6150SE IGP is probably no longer properly supported. The chip itself is pretty much 13 years old at this point.

 

I'd say put in a cheap PCIe GPU and get that up and running.
