I want to like the Pixel 2 XL, I really do. But that display...

....quite honestly is leaning really close for it to be a deal-breaker for me.

 

When the display issues first popped up, I really honestly thought it wasn’t bad for me and that I can live with it. I’ve lived with the “Basic” color mode on a couple of Galaxies and I rarely tilt my phone off-center, so the lower sRGB color gamut and severe color-shift at off-angles weren’t really enough to bother me.

 

But when the reports of screen burn-in just came in by the droves, I really was let-down. Sure, depending on your use, you probably won’t notice, but if it burns-in this easily, man, something is really wrong with these LG panels. All OLEDs burn in, but to burn-in after a remarkably short period is deeply concerning.

 

It’s painful to type this because the Pixel 2 XL has a lot of things going for it. But sadly, a display defect like this, unless resolved soon, is going to make this a non-starter for me.

The sheer irony is that LG’s OLED TVs and computer monitors are generally lauded.

 

It’s not like they’re newbs when it comes to OLED.

It's probably going to break right outside of warranty like every other LG phone.

I'd stay away from this simply because it's LG's first launch year with OLED panels. Just like any first year tech, they have to iron out the kinks with producing something like this at scale. Sucks, because the LG V30 was very high on my list of wanted devices. I'll likely wait until next year and grab a V40.

 

You're not missing out on much imo. The Pixels aren't that great.

But your comment implied that all LG phones break after their warranties expire, and I don’t think that’s necessarily the case apart from their 2015 phones and to an extent, the LG G5

G5 , 5X, V20, G4 and V10 all have lawsuits I believe. Or maybe not.

I don’t know. This isn’t the first time LG made a mobile OLED panel (they tried it on the G Flex and G Flex 2, both of which were riddled with flaws) and they would have garnered a lot of experience with OLED manufacturing for TVs and monitors. But seeing the same issue in mobile just makes me concerned.

 

And I was initially planning to get the 2 XL for the fast update and Google UI fluidity, but ended up getting the Galaxy Note8.

Exactly. They tried them on those two devices, which had massive display issues, and haven't put an OLED panel on a phone since. Kind of says something, no?

The Note8 is a good choice if you had to get something. I would have gotten one if they'd placed the fingerprint reader sensibly

Fingerprint isn’t too big of an issue for me due to my large hands. My gripe with it is that it’s slower than the one on my mom’s Honor, which is insanely quick. 

 

Overall, I love mine. Reminds me a lot about my ill-fated Note7 and the performance actually surprised me. It performed at the level I’d have expected a stock Android phone to run.

Yeah people are too hard on Samsung. A few years ago, yes, their skin would slow things down. But my Note5 was super quick (mind you I always use Nova), and has been my favorite phone to date.

 

It's not so much that I wouldn't be able to reach it, it's just a stupid place to put it. Beside the camera lenses. I refuse to reward poor design, putting form over function, with my dollars.

I don’t think anyone will disagree that it’s a silly place.

 

Though to Samsung’s credit, they did have a sort-of “band-aid” solution by putting the HRM between the sensor and cameras.

Yeah. They tried to make the best of it....but I just can't help but think the only reason they put it there was for looks, so that they didn't copy everyone elses mid back circle, and so that it'd follow the S8's design language.

Just gonna chime in with I have the V30 aka the Pixel 2 XL without the good stuff stripped out. There is color temperature differences near the bottom, but nothing too deal breaking considering the other parts of the phone. 

 

Definitely much nicer than the Nexus 6P it replaced.

the XL is what i would consider bezeless personally, little to no bezel. the normal pixel 2 on the other hand is perfect

I can use my existing good headphones and this 128GB  micro SD card for a huge media library. I wouldn't call the Pixel 2 perfect.
